5 Tips to Make a Loved One’s Final Days Most Comfortable

A loved one’s last days are never easy. But there are things we can do to make their final days as comfortable as possible. Here are 5 tips for making a loved one’s final days more comfortable:

1) Keep Them Fed And Hydrated: Feeding your loved ones is really important, especially when they are unable to feed themselves anymore. If you need assistance, consult with your loved one’s doctor or hospice care provider for recommendations.

2) Keep Them Hydrated: Staying hydrated is really important when you are getting older and your health is declining. In some circumstances, a loved one might not be able to even drink water on their own anymore. When this is the case, you need to step in and keep them hydrated. You can give them something like ice chips or foods that are high in water content if they aren’t able to hold anything else down.

3) Keep Them Engaged In Life: Keep your loved one involved in their favorite pastimes and activities as much as possible. You can do this through simple things like watching a movie, listening to music, or television shows that they enjoy if they are up for it.

4) Remain Supportive: As your loved one’s condition worsens, they may feel a sense of isolation or loneliness.  The end-of-life transition can be a very difficult and lonely process, so try not to neglect them even if they seem okay with it.

5) Take Care Of Yourself: Caring for your loved one will require a lot of time, energy, and effort. It is very important that you don’t neglect yourself during this time. While caring for someone else can be an emotional and stressful experience, it is also a rewarding one.

If you are having a hard time caregiving on your own, you may want to look into hiring professional caregivers who can help your loved one get the care they need. Contact Vantage Hospice and Palliative Care for an evaluation today.
