Is 5G necessary?

I do not like marketing hype, even when I am doing it. One of the things that bothers me is when standards become marketing terms. 4G, 5G, and even 6G are all part of the GSMA standard Long-Term Evolution. As the standards get released incrementally, marketing term applies. But marketing adds pressure and creates false expectations.

The reality is Long-Term Evolution 1.0 AKA 4G was a giant upgrade and consumers were the beneficiary.

5G from the consumer side is mostly incremental.

For the carrier, there are significant changes in the delivery of last mile service such as Fixed Wireless Access and redundancy.

Enterprises are the real beneficiary of 5G.

The majority of the 5G upgrades are business focused. Enterprises, particularly automotive are taking advantage of embedded SIMs (eSIM) to streamline the process of configuration and swapping carriers dynamically. Within their facilities Enterprises are finding ways to use 5G as a private network with better partitioning with network slicing, or creating hybrid solutions that take advantage of public, private, LoRa, satellite and Wi-Fi.

And now for the pitch.

At IoT Evolution and 5G Expo we are looking at the reality and near future of wireless technology. How it integrates with the current and how it improves business.

If you work in a business that wants to keep up with what is possible and how you can benefit from the “Gs” you should join us in Fort Lauderdale February 13-15.

It's clear that you're engaged in discussions around 5G, IoT, and IoT security. These topics are central to the evolving technological landscape. Reflecting on this, I'd love to hear your insights: In the context of IoT security, how do you envision the role of eSIM and SSIM technologies in ensuring robust cybersecurity for connected devices? Can you share any real-world examples or best practices in implementing these solutions effectively?
