7 Ways To End Homelessness
In this article, please find 7 ways how you can encourage or support others in helping the homeless / unhoused community. Also, consider donating to a Charity that is supporting this cause this Giving Tuesday.
On Tuesday, November 22nd, 2022, I was honored to speak at the Delaware Interfaith Thanksgiving service held at St Paul’s Lutheran Church located at 701 S. College Ave, Newark DE.
It was a pleasure to see so many people from different background and faith, Faith Leaders, Government Officials and Legislators, as well as CEOs of nonprofit organizations reflecting on Gratitude and the need for affordable housing.
In preparation for this event, I emersed myself in deep research over a few days in order to better understand the needs of the unhoused community. I was so pleased to discover that they themselves already had many of the solutions.
Below please find 7 tips I shared to help elevate their situation. These tips are for all States (not just Delaware). Choose whichever one(s) speaks to you.
1. Educating our faith communities.
As faith leaders, we need to educate our communities that wealth or the lack thereof is not a sign of God’s Love. We have been provided because of those who are poor and needy and not because of who we are or what we have accomplished in life.
2. Financial Inclusion for the Unhoused and those at risk:
Since the State of Delaware is the Financial Capital of the Mid Atlantic – there needs to be Financial Inclusion for the Unhoused Person and Those at Risk. They also need choices for their financial services, financial literacy and they need to feel respected in their relationships with financial service providers. Banks in Delaware can look at HSBC Bank in UK and HSBC in Hong Kong as an example who provides Banking services to the Unhoused/Homeless.
3. They need financial assistance that extends more than 6 months.
The unhoused person barely starts to make some headway after the first six months of being in that situation. If the financial assistance is extended more than 6 months (as they are usually limited to 6 months only in some states), it will provide them the much-needed support to build on their momentum.
4. They need Judges to be lenient in passing sentences on their parking violations.
Many unhoused people sleep in their cars and sometimes are subject to hefty parking fines. If they lose their car, that is when they have no other choice but to sleep on the concrete. That car was their only place to sleep in safety and with some dignity. Often times it is also their means make a living.

(Watch this video on how an unhoused person lost the car he was living in, due to high parking fines. It was also his way of making a leaving/Uber. He was saving up some money to put a deposit on an apartment and to be able to go see his 6-year-old son whom he did not see for a year.)
5. State and County officials need to support the good leadership of the unhoused community
State and County officials can look to visit and communicate of the unhoused people in the streets in order to identify and support those who are providing leadership in their homeless community. In this video, pls see how one unhoused person in California, who was a former defense contractor, worked with other unhoused people and cleaned up his neighborhood of the various crimes that were making it dangerous for their community.
6. Unhoused people representation at State Housing Agencies
State housing agencies should look to have someone in their leadership who is an unhoused person or was an unhoused person with leadership skills. That person truly knows best what it is like to be unhoused and can provide deep insight.
7. State and or County to assist in allocating land with sewerage and electricity for building Tiny Homes.
State or County can look to provide housing for them by allocating 10 to 20 acres of land where 250-300 Tiny Homes (consisting of 2 rooms) can be built for couples or families. (A separate location can be allocated for those who are single). Checkout this video of the unhoused leader who is running for Mayor and has submitted this proposal to his state/county:
As Kevin Smith, CEO of Habitat for Humanity of New Castle County challenged us that evening, I too challenge you to consider supporting a local charity this Giving Tuesday that is addressing the needs of the unhoused. You can also support by writing or vlogging or advocating for the needs of the unhoused.
