The ABC's of "R"

The ABC's of "R"

I recently read Charlie Fink’s essay "My Beef with XR" on the catch all term that the industry is quickly adopting to describe immersive technologies. Since there has been some confusion around the definition of the “R’s”, I figured I would put this to rest once and for all and define the ABC’s of R.

If there is something on here you disagree with or want to add, please do so in the comments. Let's make this a fun exercise for everyone.

AR - Augmented Reality (putting some computer graphics on top of your real world)

BR - Bohemian Reality (take all the psychedelic immersive experiences and float away...I'm looking at you MicrodoseVR)

CR - Cognitive Reality (the technology that will put all of us out of business by jacking right into your brain...Neural Link anyone?)

DR - Dog Reality (the view of the world through my dogs eyes...it's not that far off with volumetric capture)

ER - Emerging Reality (stuff we don't quite have yet, but know is coming)

FR - Friend Reality (knowing that you have friends in this industry who are there for you)

GR - Grand Reality (our crazy visions for the future)

HR - Still Human Resources (somethings are just not worth fighting)

IR - Investor Relations or Infrared (both are important to the success of immersive technology)

JR - Junior Reality (the reality your interns experience each day)

KR - Kraft Dinner Reality (the real world of immersive technology startups)

LR - Lanier Reality (the world through Jaron Lanier's eyes)

MR - Mixed Reality (a confusing and misleading term introduced by Microsoft)

NR - New Reality (checking the news alerts daily to realize the game changed...again overnight!)

OR - Operating Room (a place you end up if you aren't careful playing Pokemon Go)

PR - Public Relations (the fastest way to spread the word about immersive technologies)

QR - Quick Response Code (and something China leads and the rest of the world needs to catch up on)

RR - Real Reality (just watch this video below)

SR - Snap Reality (the world according to Snapchat, the company leading the next generation into the future)

TR - Troubled Reality (that moment when you realize that Apple's latest announcement renders your startup obsolete)

UR - Unlimited Reality (knowing there are more use cases of this technology than you can make in your lifetime...and feeling limited by this thought)

VR - Virtual Reality (sticking a giant headset on your face and jamming out in a whole new world for a while...Beat Sabre, you're my new favourite!)

WR - Women's Reality (a small, but mighty group of leaders building immersive technology and experiences we might actually use)

XR - Xtended Reality (the catch all term that the enterprise community will adopt for the entire realm of immersive technologies)

YR - Your Reality (the world through your own world lens)

ZR - Zebra Reality (I know, I know. I couldn't think of anything else that interesting lol)

Well there you have it. The ABC’s of R. Now can we get back to the job of making cool experiences and stop the debate of which “R” we should use??

If you have others put them in to the comments below. We will keep updating this as a living document of our R’s.

Interesting Alan Smithson 🚀 , but you forgot about aR, Assisted Reality, which is so fashionable today, that's what I call smart glasses that show data but do not have the ability to perform tracking, do you agree?

That's funny! I think Zen Reality would be applicable for all the meditation/mindfulness apps out there...
