A/C: The Less You Use, The Happier You'll Be

Air conditioning may help keep us cool in summer, but it’s hard to feel comfortable about how much money it costs.

At Big Ass Fans, breezes are our business, thermal comfort is our mission, and we love to save you money on your utility bills. So we’ve compiled some tips for living comfortably and using less A/C.

  • When the sun goes down, so does the temperature, especially in drier climates. So take advantage of this by raising your thermostat at night and opening windows. Remember to close them in the morning to keep the cool air in. Some of the most energy-efficient buildings use this technique, which is sometimes called “night flush.”
  • Lower the blinds. That way you’ll keep the warmth of the sun from heating your house.
  • Get smart, save more. Use smart-home products like our Haiku and i6 with SenseMe™. SenseMe’s sensors respond automatically to changing room conditions, including whether you’re in there or not. See your energy costs go down.
  • Just get a ceiling fan. Better yet, get several. The breeze from ENERGY STAR certified ceiling fans such as Haiku and i6 can make you feel up to 10 °F cooler. That means you can turn the thermostat up several degrees and still be comfy. We’ve tested it. And Big Ass fans add only a few bucks a year to your electricity bill.
