Adapt or ...

As a climate and environment defender everyday you find yourself asking if there is more you can do or even checking yourself so you are not a hypocrite to what you ask of others.

From when you have the urge to buy a car but you want to lead by example ,to when you cannot order that Nopea ride (Kenyans will get this) because the service is not offered where you live,or you cannot cycle to work for reason best known to you that are unavoidable.

The fact that you and I are thinking about it and trying to find a better way to reduce our ecological and carbon footprint is better than anyone who still thinks we have time to misuse and degrade Mother Nature.

Despite the skepticism from several people, some we know closely, environmental and climate justice issues are real issues and the solutions are at the palm of our hands. To bring 'a just transition' and not only to 'just transition' we need everyone to be on the same page that we need immediate solutions to the climate and overall environmental crisis.

Today 350.org alongside NotreAffaire launched this research ,that shows openly that Total, one of the biggest fossil fuel giants, knew that their continuous investment in fossil fuel extraction and production will be detrimental to the climate and yet they went on,business as usual for years.

The research also reveals, among other things, that in 2020, Total produced 447 units of fossil fuels for every 1 unit of renewable energy and that fossil fuels will still account for over 80% of Total's investments in 2030.

To make matters more dire, the recently launched IPCC report is warning us yet again that we really need to cut back on our fossil fuel consumption if we want to prevent the global temperatures tipping over the recommended 1.5 degrees celsius above pre industrial levels.

Unfortunately,we can only do that ,efficiently, if the biggest drivers of fossil fuel infrastructure use that same zeal and energy to lead ,invest and inspire sustainable ,environmental and community friendly alternatives to energy provision.

"It is not the most intellectual of the species that survives; it is not the strongest that survives; but the species that survives is the one that is able to adapt to and to adjust best to the changing environment in which it finds itself"

Fellow humans ,if there is one thing I know we can do very well is adapt.Moving away from fossil fuels is amongst the things I have full confidence that we can easily do,that is if ,we want to.

A just transition is possible and it is needed now more than ever and we need each one of us to make it happen, but if fossil reliant giants like Total will keep cheating the rest of the world off a chance to be better we will continue to hold them accountable.
