Advocating in DC, Celebrating Diversity at Home: Chamber News

I'm just back from an amazing trip to Washington, DC! This trip represented the Chamber's 20th Annual DC Fly-in , with forty leaders from our community. I’ll share a more full recap of the trip in next week’s newsletter.

While there, we highlighted the fact that sensible and bipartisan immigration and border security solutions are important to our region and our economic growth. This is a critical part of our policy agenda, and it will remain so until Congress finally acts to improve our country’s immigration policy.

Here in the Cincinnati Region, we’ve been leading and promoting efforts that make us a community where everyone belongs, especially immigrants and refugees. For instance, Cincinnati Compass is an important initiative supported and led by more than 65 community partners who believe that immigrants and refugees are key contributors to a strong regional economy and a diverse and vibrant community. Compass works to advance the social and economic inclusion of our immigrant and refugee population. These households represent $2.9 billion in spending power in our region. Immigrants and refugees contribute $385 million to our tax base.

Today, September 13th, Cincinnati Compass  kicks off National Welcoming Week with its annual Cincinnati Rhythm  event. Now in its 12th year, Welcoming Week is a national effort focused on organizations and communities bringing together neighbors of all backgrounds to build strong connections and affirm the importance of welcoming and inclusive places in achieving collective prosperity. And Cincinnati Rhythm is just one way we welcome immigrants and refugees into our community. The event is a celebration of our global community highlighting great food, music, and showing off our region’s cultural vibrancy. You can sign up by visiting this website, and I hope to see you there!

I am proud of our region’s efforts to work collaboratively on issues that affect us all, whether by advocating in Washington or Columbus or building solutions at home in our region. That’s the way we’ll make positive change to grow our region.

P.S. Hot off the Presses: Cincinnati has been selected as 1 of the final 3 cities for the Sundance Film Festival . It's a huge honor and recognition for our region. Congrats go out to all who worked to make this happen!

City Councilman Mark Jeffreys explains the city’s short-term funding partnership with Metro, the Chamber, and the Haile Foundation and his long-term goals in the Summer issue of Realm, the journal for Queen City CEOs from Cincinnati Magazine.
