Bienvenue à bord du REM!

The Réseau express métropolitain (REM) – Quebec’s first automated light rail system – has begun revenue services on the project's first phase, connecting Montréal’s South Shore to downtown at Gare Centrale.

Known as the South antenna, the 16.6-km section between Brossard and Montréal’s downtown will operate 20 hours a day, 7 days a week to provide a safe and reliable public transit alternative, facilitating the daily travel of over 30,000 people for work, education, leisure activities or to reconnect with friends and family.

Aecon is proud to be a part of this achievement through the NouvLR partnership with SNC-Lavalin, Dragados, Pomerleau, and EBC. Building on this success, NouvLR will continue to bring their expertise and experience in the design and construction of the remaining phases of the project.

Manuel Rivaya, SVP, Urban Transportation Solutions, Roger Arsenault, VP, Major Projects, Eastern Canada and Nicole Court, Vice President, Corporate Affairs attended the inauguration with the NouvLR team.

“Thank you and congratulations to all our Aecon team members who have worked tirelessly for the past four years to reach this milestone. I look forward to working together to further this landmark project, doubling the length of the existing metro system, and delivering transit options to more communities across Montréal,” says Rivaya.

Once completed, the fully electric and automated REM will become the longest automated metro in the world, spanning 67 kms, with 26 fully accessible stations. The REM will connect parts of Greater Montreal for the first time, such as the South Shore and West Island to downtown Montreal, as well as connections to Pierre-Elliot Trudeau Airport – where Aecon is also working as part of the Connect Cité partnership to deliver the REM Airport Station.

We’re proud to announce that the name of the Aecon Achievement Award (AAA) for Inclusion has been updated to honour and remember our late colleague, Geewadin Elliott, and his important contributions to Aecon and Indigenous communities across Canada and the United States.

For 2022, the new AAA Geewadin Elliott Inclusion Award is presented posthumously to Geewadin. The award will continue to be presented annually to a team or individual who has significantly contributed to helping make Aecon a more inclusive place to work and championing underrepresented groups.

Miigwech, Geewadin, for playing such a pivotal role in our Reconciliation efforts and for your dedication to sharing the truth of the injustices Indigenous Peoples face on Turtle Island.
