AFROTECH 2023: A New Frontier for Tech Opportunities
As the tech ecosystem continues to evolve, so does the need for diverse representation and inclusion within the industry. I recently attended AFROTECH 2023, a leading tech conference that celebrates and connects black technologists, startups, and entrepreneurs from across the globe. It was an amazing experience – buzzing with innovation, creativity, and a collective desire to push the boundaries of what's possible in tech.
As a global leader in tech education and certification, CompTIA helps individuals start and flourish in tech careers. As we are committed to fostering relationships and building relevance within diverse tech communities, being present at events like AFROTECH allows us to connect directly with those seeking to launch or advance their careers.
The conference had a strong slate of sessions, and two that I attended resonated with me. Representatives from Discover Financial Services , Earn Your Leisure and Chatham BT Community discussed the importance of Black talent in tech, highlighting the vast economic opportunities it can bring to communities. They emphasized the numerous tech career opportunities and the flexibility to enter, particularly when accessed through nontraditional routes such as certifications and training programs. This session underscored the transformative power of the tech industry for individuals and communities alike.
Redefining Your Career in the New World of Work, presented by LinkedIn, focused on the significance of Black talent adopting a "skills first mindset" in the evolving world of work. The session emphasized the necessity for a strategic approach to career development, particularly for Black professionals, and highlighted that most jobs now prioritize skills over traditional qualifications.

The hiring and retention of Black talent in tech is crucial for several reasons. Diversity fosters innovation – and different perspectives lead to varied ideas, which can result in innovative solutions. If a single demographic group dominates, there is the risk of creating technologies that only cater to the needs and experiences of that group, potentially excluding others.
The tech industry is one of the fastest-growing sectors with a high demand for skilled professionals. If Black talent is not part of this growth, they risk being left behind economically. High-paying jobs and entrepreneurial opportunities within the tech industry can significantly contribute to reducing the wealth gap.
Representation matters. The presence of Black professionals in the tech industry can inspire and encourage younger generations to consider careers in tech, creating a positive cycle of growth and opportunity.
To ensure Black talent is not left behind, it's important to address the barriers that may discourage them from entering or staying in the tech industry. This includes promoting alternative pathways, such as certifications and training programs, and creating inclusive work environments where all employees feel valued and supported.
