After Germany, the largest port in Europe will strike again

Recently, a strike was held in several German seaports, including Hamburg, Germany's largest port. Ports such as Emden, Bremen and William have been affected. According to the latest news, the port of Antwerp Bruges, one of the largest ports in Europe, is preparing to strike again, while Belgium's port facilities are suffering from serious congestion.

Many trade unions plan to hold a national strike next Monday, demanding higher wages, enhanced dialogue and public sector investment. A similar one-day national general strike took place at the end of May. The suspension of port staff led to the paralysis of the operation of many ports in the country.

In a notice to PSA's international customers, it said: "due to the active participation of employees in port related work, our operational activities are limited." PSA is the main terminal operator in Antwerp, Belgium. Antwerp is the flagship port of PSA in Europe.

At the end of last year, Antwerp, the second largest port in Europe, announced the merger with another port, Zeebrugge, and officially began to work as a unified entity in April. The integrated port of Antwerp Bruges claims to be the largest export port in Europe, with 74000 employees. It is said to be the largest automobile port in the European continent. With the arrival of the peak season, the port has faced considerable pressure.

German container shipping company Herbert suspended barge service at Antwerp Port this month due to increased congestion at the terminal. Contargo, the barge operator, warned a week ago that the waiting time for ships in Antwerp Port had increased from 33 hours at the end of May to 46 hours on June 9.

With the arrival of this year's peak transport season, the threat posed by European port strikes is seriously troubling freight forwarders.

Last Friday, there was a brief and threatening strike among the dock workers in Hamburg Port, Germany. It was the first strike in Germany's largest port in more than 30 years. At the same time, other port cities in northern Germany also participated in the salary negotiation. The unions in Hanseatic are threatening further strikes at a time when the port is already heavily congested.
