Most age 40+ job seekers don't give themselves a chance to beat ageism ...
That's because most candidates over 40 don't recognize when they need to do differently to mitigate employer ageism risk (or even recognize that employers perceive significant risks to hire most age 40+ job seekers).
Unfortunately, most age 40+ job seekers search for a job in pretty much the same way as job seekers in their 20's and 30's. Searching the same way as a 30 year old gives you little chance of beating employer ageism and landing a job.
Here are 4 ways age 40+ job seekers can give yourself a chance to find your next job fast:
- Heavy Resume Customization: When you make the rookie mistake of using the same resume template to apply for jobs it's not going to end well for you. That's because employer prescreening processes (ATS and human review) reward candidates who heavily customize their resume, and penalize job seekers who use light or no customization.
- Impact: Almost all resumes (and interviews) focus on responsibilities/experience/qualifications/tasks, but employers expect more from age 40+ candidates, because they anticipate you'll need higher compensation. If an employer is expecting to pay more, they're expecting you can do more. Forcusing employers on the impact you've made helps you mitigate employer age risk and it proves you're worth higher compensation.
- Don't Apply Online: There are many reasons that when you apply online, you end up with terrible odds of landing a job, and it's worse when you're age 40+. Part of what justifies your higher value when you're over 40 is your network ... especially when your network is strong enough to help you find a job. When you're over 40 and applying online, it's difficult to differentiate yourself from a noob.
- Stop Hiding Age: Hiding your age on your resume is some of the worst (and most common) advice given to age 40+ job seekers. It's based on a false theory that employers will screen out by dates, which leaves a trail of age discrimination digital evidence - So HR departments don't allow their recruiters to screen by dates. Instead, hiding age creates another risk (what are you hiding?), and creates a perception of deception when you interview live.
Ask yourself ... how many of the above ways to give yourself a chance are you using in your job search process?

1yPhil Rosenberg I successfully landed four gig jobs after my corporate role was eliminated. I was past 40 when that happened. I have to believe gig (consulting) jobs are easier and faster to land than direct hire positions. I was not interested in direct hire, so these jobs worked fine for me. I support your post. 👍
