AgReserves' Brazil operation plants seeds of progress

Rubens Quadros helped plant seeds of change at AgroReservas do Brasil (ARB), and now he’s guiding his team to bountiful harvests as the farm’s general manager.

When AgReserves purchased ARB 20 years ago, the land in Brazil’s state of Minas Gerais was being used to produce eucalyptus, citrus, and coffee, as well as for grazing cattle. Over time, crop selection has been refined to make the most of the land’s resources. A move toward seed crop cultivation has paid off with significantly improved performance.

“Right now, we’re setting the standard for all of Brazil as a seed grower,” Rubens says. “The best companies in the country want to make deals with us and sign contracts. Now, we have the advantage of choosing who we want to work with because we are specializing in seed production.”

One of those companies is Bayer, which visited ARB on May 16 to say thank you for their partnership and to present its Prime Grower award. During the ceremony, Bayer’s representatives called ARB one of its most important and special partners.

While specializing in soybean seed and seed corn, AgroReservas do Brasil also produces soybeans, corn, and – for the second year now – cotton.

Because sustainability is always a priority at AgReserves operations, the ARB team – made up entirely of native Brazilians – is working on a renewable energy solution to deal with occasional interruptions in the local power grid. To create a more reliable power source, ARB is preparing to install a farm-scale solar project to generate sufficient electricity for basic farm and office operations.

AgroReservas do Brasil also holds more preservation ground than is required by government mandate, with nearly a third of the farm’s acreage currently set aside for conservation requirements.

Rubens gives a lot of credit for the farm’s success to everyone on his team, and keeping his employees safe is a top priority. “We put a lot of effort into safety training,” Rubens says. “A lot of training; tons of hours of training, so the employees know we care about them.” Rubens adds, “We have the best employees here in Brazil. We have good employees who are very engaged, very focused, and committed to their jobs.”

Pat Tolman, Row Crops Division Vice President, agrees that the ARB team is making a difference. “Under Rubens’ leadership, the employees at ARB have focused on our division goal to achieve operational excellence. They have built a strong foundation that is moving them in the right direction. Their passion for operational excellence is evident in the results they’ve achieved,” Pat says.  He further explains, “Achieving operational excellence at each farming location is one of five strategic goals of our division. It’s a benchmark that will take years of continuous effort to fully realize at all our farms, but Brazil is already well down that path.”

Working with his team is especially fulfilling for Rubens. When asked to name the favorite part of his job, he’s quick to say, “To work with people. I love to work with people. If you have good, committed people, you can do whatever is asked of you. I love to be with them.”

Farming has always been a part of life for Rubens, a native Brazilian who grew up on a farm in the southern part of the country. Reflecting on what keeps him working at AgReserves, Rubens explains, “People ask me if I like my job. I tell them that I don’t really work in my job, I just enjoy my job. I don’t see myself as working because I so enjoy what I do.”
