Two-thirds of people are aware of the use of AI - cameras can detect and track abnormal and alarming situations in public areas, and half have seen facial recognition technology to track offenders, according to a new study from the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). Facial and biometric systems have become established as the master recognition software, with machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) as their most powerful tools. Modern facial recognition systems are used to identify, authorize and verify a person in a video or source of digital images.   

This has the potential to enable multiple applications to make smart cities secure, but also has the potential for abuse, as facial recognition technology becomes more sophisticated. Indeed, according to a recent study by the University of California, Berkeley, and the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) in the United States of America (USA), 3D facial recognition technology is in many ways better than 2D facial recognition technology.
