AI — The journey from obscurity to omnipresence

AI — The journey from obscurity to omnipresence

From cavemen to AI, we’ve come a long way!

AI is set to make big waves. Even the coffee machine knows our favorite brews by now!

Just kidding. Or maybe not.

Unless you’ve missed the buzz, you’ve likely heard about the latest advancements in healthcare, self-driving cars, voice bots, AI tutors, cybersecurity, AI-generated art, and AI-assisted content creation.

How does that make you feel? Empowered? Overwhelmed? Or unmoved?

The future of AI is unfolding before our eyes, promising to redefine our world in remarkable ways. Did you know researchers in the Netherlands have built an AI-driven sarcasm detector that can catch even the subtlest remarks? Even we can’t catch all the sarcasm sometimes—and we’re humans!

With all this talk about AI, I almost forgot to welcome you. Glad you’re here! Before you scroll, let’s address a quick question: Why would you need a monthly thought leadership newsletter? Look around you! In today’s knowledge economy, ideas and wisdom are the new currency.

At Systems Limited, we’re committed to communicating our insights by serving up snackable updates on tech innovations, from AI to digital transformation and beyond.

What’s in it?

In this edition, we’re diving into AI—how organizations are using it, the latest Gen AI trends, and how it can create real value for businesses. You’ve probably heard the buzz about generative AI, and 7 months into 2024, it’s making a huge impact. From driving automation and shaping marketing to enhancing decision-making, AI is changing how enterprises operate and engage with customers. It seems AI’s not just raising the bar—it’s setting a whole new one!

AI, AI everywhere! This isn’t a buzzword, it isn’t just a tool, it is a game-changer reshaping industries across the globe.

Let’s take a stroll down memory lane to understand how this magical journey began.

AI might be over 70 years old, but for the longest time, it was like the secret sauce in a niche recipe—used mainly for speech and video processing. It wasn’t until the 2010s that AI hit the mainstream with chatbots like Siri, Alexa, and Google Assistant, turning our daily routines from meh to WOW

Ever wonder why AI seems like it’s everywhere now? Well, by 2019, businesses were already seeing the ROI magic of scaling AI beyond just pilot projects. Then, the pandemic came along and made enterprise-wide transformation a survival tool for some and a growth rocket for others.

Fast-forward to November 2022 and ChatGPT burst onto the scene like a rockstar which showed us AI’s true potential, even with its limited data.

Now, AI is practically woven into the fabric of our lives. Whether it’s your AI assistant or the tech we interact with daily, it’s becoming the backbone of computer processing. Industries like healthcare, finance, retail, and manufacturing are all feeling the AI vibe. Nvidia is even integrating GPUs with CPUs, which is like giving machine learning a turbo boost. Microsoft is empowering employees in every business function by bringing interactive, AI-powered assistance to every line of business through Copilot.

According to Gartner GenAI will significantly alter 70 % of the design and development effort for new web applications and mobile apps by 2026.

It’s clear that AI is no longer a futuristic fantasy: it’s a business must-have. At the front of this AI revolution is Generative AI, which uses algorithms to create new content like text, images, videos, and even code. What used to take days can be accomplished in mere minutes with the right AI tools.

AI adoption has surged significantly as shown below in the Mckinsey Global Survey on AI – March 2024

Looking to the future, it is wise to continue to invest in these technologies. However, with great power comes great responsibility. Businesses must ensure the responsible use of AI systems beyond simply complying with the laws. Ethical debates are already underway about what’s right or wrong with high-stakes AI, such as autonomous weapons and surveillance. Companies are facing ethical issues with AI, as even harmless uses of it can have serious consequences, making leaders concerned that nothing bad happens as they deploy AI.

Sure, there are drawbacks to any new technology, but the best way forward is to weigh the pros and cons together. It is natural to be skeptical of new disruptive technologies but know one thing—they're here to help us, to ease our burden and end the drudgery!

The best approach isn’t to avoid AI entirely—its benefits can be too significant. Instead, organizations should focus on responsible AI practices. This means ensuring AI outputs are fair, preventing discrimination through personalization, safeguarding consumer privacy, and balancing performance with transparency about how AI makes predictions.

Let's take a look at the AI use cases across major industries:

According to IDC, organizations see an average return of $3.50 for every $1 invested in AI technology.

One thing is for sure, we’ve entered a new era of infinite possibilities. As AI technologies become more prevalent, the future of businesses around the globe is going to look different – some will lead the change, and some will be swept along. Those who transform will be the ones who master the art of digital transformation, using the cloud as the enabler, data as the driver, and AI as the differentiator. The question is, which side will you be on?
