Population Media Center has worked in Zambia since 2018 when The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) awarded PMC $2.6 million to develop and disseminate content targeting behavior change to improve the health of women and children in Zambia. In 2021, USAID extended its support for the two popular PMC-Zambia radio shows, Kwishilya (“Over the Horizon”) and Siñalamba (“Breaking the Barrier”).
PMC-Zambia Spearheads InnovaLab Projects
Now, PMC-Zambia is at the forefront of our exciting InnovaLab projects.
In July, the team had the incredible opportunity to kick off the pilot of an exciting new project called the Comic Book Show in Chadiza (Chadiza Day School) and Katete (Omelo Mumba Day School) districts.
The Comic Book Show is a visual storytelling experience shown to children at schools, sparking important discussions about these pressing issues. We will also be showcasing the show to parents in the community, facilitating open conversations about the challenges they face.The project is currently being implemented at 10 schools within these two districts.
This initiative aims to address critical issues such as early marriage, teenage pregnancies, SGBV, and HIV among school-going children and adults.
"In Uganda, 3 out of 4 new HIV cases are among teenage girls. In Zambia, our Comic Book Road Show has highlighted the need to start HIV prevention with even younger children. In many countries, gender violence prevents women from seeking treatment. We believe these issues can be addressed while maintaining a high quality of life. That's why we create engaging stories that inform and drive people to access essential services. Our approach is 100% developed with local talent and aims to generate positive change through entertainment, education, and empathy."
