Apple Joins AI Pioneers in Biden’s Landmark AI Initiative

Nine months ago, President Biden issued an impactful Executive Order to ensure that the United States leads the world in advancing the potential and managing the risks of artificial intelligence (AI).

This directive was built on voluntary commitments from 15 leading U.S. AI companies last year.

Yesterday, the administration announced that Apple has signed onto these voluntary commitments.

This act further highlights the importance of the movement towards responsible and ethical AI development in the United States.

Key Takeaways

  • AI Talent Joins the Government: Over 200 AI professionals were hired through various initiatives to contribute to AI-related endeavours across the government.
  • Advancing U.S. Leadership Abroad: A comprehensive plan for U.S. engagement on global AI standards was issued as well as guidance for managing AI risks to human rights.
  • Managing Risks to Safety and Security: The AI safety institute released new technical guidelines for public comment to manage the misuse of dual-use AI models.

Additionally, federal agencies have completed all of the 270-day actions outlined in the Executive Order, while successfully meeting all other required deadlines.

Following the Executive Order and Vice President Harris’s calls to action during her keynote at the Global Summit on AI Safety, government agencies have taken stringent measures to address AI’s safety and security risks, safeguard privacy, advance equity and civil rights, protect consumers and workers, promote innovation and competition, and showcase American leadership globally.

Chelsea Alves , a consultant with UNMiss, said,

"Apple's commitment to the voluntary AI guidelines emphasizes the importance of collaboration between government and the tech industry to shape a future of AI that’s both ethical and rewarding.

She continued,

This alignment highlights the United States’ goal of leading the advancement of AI while also ensuring that the development and deployment of AI technologies prioritize safety, security, and ethical standards.

With these strategic partnerships in place, individuals and businesses alike can leverage all of AI’s capabilities while safeguarding the public."

President Biden’s Executive Order marks a historic turning point in advancing AI innovation responsibly.

With Apple joining this crucial initiative, the administration continues to pave a clearer path for a safer, more equitable AI landscape.

This comprehensive approach ensures that America remains a leader in AI technology development but does so with a steadfast commitment to safety, privacy, and global leadership.
