Apple vs Samsung - Who's year is it?

In recent years, the global tech market has been dominated by Apple & Samsung, they both continue to be the most renowned mobile gadget and electronic manufacturers in the world.

Ever since Samsung produced their first smartphone in 2010, it turned the tech market into a two horse race. Apple and Samsung have become fierce competitors at all levels.

The smartphone war has even continued in the courts as Apple and Samsung have accused each other of copying each other’s products. Recently in the US courts, Samsung won over Apple in a long running patent fight by overriding the verdict ordering Samsung to pay Apple a big lump sum of $119.6 million that’s equivalent to £84.5 million.

Apple released the iPhone 6S & 6S plus back in September last year, so we haven’t been able to compare Apple and Samsung until now. Samsung have just released the S7 and I have to say that it does look impressive in terms of the camera and performance of the phone. I think it will be interesting to compare the two phones and see who is on top. Apple won’t release the iPhone 7 until September 2016 so for now, the battle is 6S vs S7.

We can establish that both companies are improving their technology in terms of smartphones. There are certainly pros and cons to both. In my opinion, I have had the chance of having both Apple and Samsung smartphones but I am definitely an Apple lover. I think a lot of Apple’s sales are from the younger generation of today as Apple seems to be a trend setter so millennials will of course want to buy their phones as all their friends will be getting Apple smartphones or already have one.

Here are some pros and cons of Apple and Samsung;

Apple pros

Design: We can all say that iPhone’s are among the best design in the market at the moment. They are durable and also feature shock absorb and soon to be waterproofing.

System (IOS): Over time, IOS have improved massively. iTunes and Apple store have been the biggest factors of the improvements. I think the Apple produced a high quality app store that just can’t compare to the Play Store. Apple always have been first on the list when it comes to new and upcoming apps. Samsung have always had to wait.

Security: I feel that the enhanced security of TouchID is far superior to an android.

Apple cons

IOS limitations: The problem with Apple is they have restricted downloads to Apple store and have various limitations.

Pricing: Apple have always been a pricey trend, making it unaffordable to many but it does seem that every year without fail that you see the Apple products succeed.

Low battery life: Apple are known for their poor battery life quality with less power saving options and higher data output. Samsung have an excellent battery life.

Samsung pros

Pricing: As Apple are the most expensive in the market, Samsung have taken advantage of this by having much more competitive pricing which also extends to costs and ease of repair.

Battery life: Samsung have produced a fast charging method that give your phone less downtime and more usefulness.

Product range: Samsung are one of the oldest manufacturers on the market, they serve a global market producing a wide variety of gadgets ranging from large touchscreen smartphones to old technologies.

Samsung cons

Frequent release cycles: No matter what generation of an Apple phone you have, you can take the opportunity to upgrade your IOS system to the latest version whereas Samsung quickly replace their latest model phones to a more updated design.

Hardware: The design and hardware isn’t comparable to Apple’s more modern look. High prices for modern technology. The Galaxy S series is one of the priciest in the market.

In conclusion, we can officially say that Apple and Samsung are the top two phone manufacturing companies in the world at this moment in time. Comparing their latest phones can be challenging but also very interesting. Being an owner of the iPhone 6 and Samsung Galaxy S3, I don’t think I would go back to having a Samsung because personally I think the iPhone is a better product than the Galaxy series from Samsung.

Recently I ran a poll on Apple vs Samsung, I have already had some interesting results. I’ll leave a link below to the poll and maybe you could take it yourself and see what others think about the battle between the two.

Great article, It is fascinating to see how the rivalry between Apple and Samsung has intensified over the years. Even in my own friend group I have a number of friends that tend to be either 'Pro Apple' or 'Pro Samsung'. I feel like I would be the counter to your viewpoint though Kyle McLaughlin as I have tried the iPhone and then discovered firmly that I prefer the Android Operating system and Samsung as a brand.
