The Role of Extreme Event Attribution in Understanding Heat Waves

  • Extreme weather, particularly heat waves, threatens ecosystems, infrastructure, and human societies. Climate warming increases these events’ frequency and intensity, causing significant global damage.
  • According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change ( IPCC ), heat waves, defined as consecutive days of unusually hot weather, result in various detrimental effects, such as heat-related illnesses, crop failures, ecological stress, and heightened risks of droughts and wildfires. The IPCC’s 2023 report underscores that anthropogenic climate change exacerbates these threats, increasing heat waves' intensity, frequency, and duration.

Overlooked Giant in Supply Chain Emissions

  • In 2023, corporates reported that their Scope 3 supply chain emissions were, on average, 26 times greater than their direct operations emissions (Scopes 1 and 2). According to the new report “Scope 3 Upstream: Big Challenges, Simple Remedies” by Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and CDP, upstream emissions from the manufacturing, retail, and materials sectors were 1.4 times the total CO2 emitted in the EU in 2022.
  • Notably, the manufacturing, retail, and materials sectors reported upstream emissions of 1.4 times the total CO2 emitted in the EU in 2022. Despite this disproportionate scale, these emissions continue to be overlooked, with corporations twice as likely to measure operational emissions and 2.4 times more likely to set targets for them than supply chain emissions. Alarmingly, only 15% of corporates disclosing through CDP have set upstream Scope 3 targets.

Balancing Performance and Sustainability at the Paris Olympics

  • The Paris 2024 Olympic Games are set to be a landmark event for athletic excellence and their ambitious sustainability goals. However, a significant challenge has arisen with several national teams, including the United States, opting to supply air conditioners for their athletes. This move conflicts with the organizers’ efforts to minimize carbon emissions and presents a complex dilemma: balancing athlete performance with environmental responsibility.
  • According to the International Energy Agency, air conditioning is uncommon in European households, with fewer than 1 in 10 having AC units. Globally, out of 1.6 billion AC units in 2016, over half were in China (570 million) and the United States (375 million), contrasting sharply with around 100 million units across the European Union.
