Atmo Launches High-Resolution Kenya Weather Model with 51 Degrees and Allen Institute for AI

Locust invasions and human-wildlife conflict are among the weather-related calamities increasingly hitting the African continent. To address this growing challenge, Atmo just launched a high-resolution, AI-based weather model for the Horn of Africa, in collaboration with 51 Degrees, a conservation solutions and crisis management group, and EarthRanger, a real-time software solution from the Allen Institute for AI.

“We rely on real-time accurate predictions to be able to work in a manner that allows proactive and timely responses, be this in the conservation or humanitarian space,” said Batian Craig, Director of 51 Degrees. “Atmo may finally give us the detailed weather foresight within an integrated platform that will allow us to deliver these services with much greater efficiency.”

Both parties signed a letter of cooperation. The goal of the Atmo-51 Degrees partnership is to significantly increase the quality of weather forecasting in Kenya, Somalia, and Ethiopia. Furthermore, Atmo will train additional AI models to predict locust movements, as 51 Degrees currently supports the monitoring and management for locust mitigation in partnership with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization in the region.

“Historically, organizations in Kenya relied on overseas-imported global forecasts, which are not tailored to this geographic area,” said Johan Mathe, Co-Founder and CTO of Atmo. “Atmo’s AI-based forecasting and accelerated computing will bring unprecedented detail to meteorology in Kenya and neighbouring countries”.
