The auto industry isn’t what it used to be. Gearheads still are welcome, but so are people with new skills and diverse backgrounds.
The Automotive Inspire interview series showcases the life stories of women and people of color working in the automotive technology industry.
- Joann Jung immigrated from South Korea as a teenager and wanted to be an artist and sculptor. She’s now an automotive designer at Lucid Motors who sculpts beautiful electric car interiors which she calls “rolling sculpture.”
- Growing up in China, Mei Cai wanted to be a medical doctor. Instead she came to the U.S., got a doctorate in chemical engineering and is playing a pivotal role in the development of General Motors’ revolutionary Ultium EV batteries.
- Melissa Cefkin wasn’t thinking about cars when she became a PhD in cultural anthropology, but she’s now playing a crucial role in the future of mobility at autonomous vehicle producer Waymo. She’s using her expertise in the study of human behavior to create AVs that are predictable and trusted by everyone else on the road – including pedestrians.
- Richard Vaughan is a car fanatic who started sketching cars with crayons. When he was 14, he saw a magazine article about Black car designers and knew that was what he wanted to be. And that is what he has become, designing everything from the first Lincoln Navigator luxury SUV to creating high-tech instrument clusters. He’s written six books about British luxury cars, is a nationally known collector of Bentley, Rolls-Royce, and Aston Martin luxury cars and now leads the teams responsible for making sure Rivian’s electric pickup trucks and SUVs ooze the same attention to detail as the best luxury vehicles in the world.
Joann, Mei, Melissa and Richard come from very different backgrounds, but they have one thing in common: They all love working in the automotive/mobility industries.
There are thousands of people like them and they are telling their stories virtually to interviewer Drew Winter on the third Thursday of every month – and in person at Automotive Tech Week and Automotive Tech Week Europe.
