About AMT Day and Charles Taylor

Aviation Maintenance Technician Day, observed on May 24th, was ratified by the United States House of Representatives in 2008. It’s a day to celebrate the commitment, integrity, and skill of aircraft mechanics, with a special nod to Charles E. Taylor, the world’s first aviation maintenance technician.

Charles E. Taylor, born in 1868, worked alongside Orville and Wilbur Wright, contributing significantly to the development of the first powered heavier-than-air aircraft.

Taylor’s mechanical skills were vital in building and maintaining early Wright engines and airplanes. In fact, he built the first aircraft engine used by the Wright brothers in their iconic Wright Flyer. His legacy as an unsung hero of aviation endures, and he remains a key figure in the history of flight.
