The Benefits & Successes of Mental Health Outpatient Services at Georgetown Behavioral Health Institute

People with mental health challenges can sometimes feel alone in their struggles. By taking part in an outpatient program at Georgetown Behavioral Health Institute, patients can have ready access to the support they need while realizing they are not the only ones facing these types of challenges. Our outpatient programs are also designed to help people develop their social skills, which in turn may help them feel less isolated and depressed.

At Georgetown Behavioral Health Institute, our outpatient programs also provide real-life examples of people who have had success with their recovery. Getting the chance to meet and engage with others and hear their stories can be both encouraging and motivating to patients who are dealing with behavioral health issues. Also, while it can be uncomfortable to discuss mental health issues with friends and family, our outpatient programs bring an empathetic and judgment-free aspect to the sessions.

Offering Success for the Future

Our outpatient programs may also help people maintain the progress made during inpatient care. In turn, this can prevent a backslide and future hospitalizations.

Even if someone has not been part of an inpatient program, our outpatient care can be extremely beneficial for future mental health and well-being. We offer a safe and recovery-focused environment for all patients while encouraging them to maintain their usual everyday activities, including work, school, and time with friends and family.

Overview of Our Three Outpatient Programs

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

We offer a variety of Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) for children, adolescents, adults, and seniors. IOP is a less intensive choice that more freely allows people to maintain their daily routines. The program runs three hours a day, and we provide snacks and beverages. IOP groups are available Monday through Friday at various times of the day, and people take part for up to eight weeks.

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

Our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) is our most structured outpatient program, offering daily connections with peers along with clinical and medical oversight. Therapy is also in a group setting and can run up to six hours a day; we provide lunch, beverages, and snacks. We have found that PHP is ideal for people who are leaving an inpatient program as well as those who might need a higher level of support before switching to another one of our outpatient programs. Like IOP, PHP groups meet during the day and are flexible so that our patients can still maintain their usual schedules as much as possible.

Telehealth

At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, many mental healthcare providers began to offer telehealth options for their patients. This technology allows patients to limit their travels and maintain social distancing while still getting access to needed healthcare. We are pleased to offer secure and HIPAA-compliant telehealth choices. These are great options for adolescents and adults who might have distance or health-related barriers to attending in person. Using an internet connection and their smartphone, tablet, laptop, or desktop computer, patients can participate in outpatient services from virtually anywhere that has an internet connection.
