BOR the Film
BOR is a heartfelt documentary about a brave, young man named Bor Verkroost, who after years of battling with a painful skin disease Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB), decides to end his life at the age of 38, through the controversial choice of euthanasia and sadly only two months later his mother passed away from what doctors say was a ‘broken heart’.
He had long surpassed the life expectancy he was given at birth and according to the doctors was given only two weeks to live. His desire to find love and to live life fully, propelled him to make some unconventional choices that pushed him beyond his own limits, allowing him to overcome incredible obstacles and simultaneously inspiring others along the way.
This documentary portrays another side of a seemingly impossible life: loyal and enduring friendships, a fascination with the Roman Empire and a tireless love of parties, festivals and celebrations. Within this gaze we also see the shadow side: an unrequited love, loneliness and a deteriorating body.
BOR is a raw and honest portrait filled with candid conversations, musical highlights and a transparent look at this painful disease.
The film began production in 2010 and was directed by Floris Leeuwenberg, who began his career as a photographer and then made the transition to film. Floris got to know Bor in that same year and was immediately taken by his ambition, perseverance and positivity. He decided to follow Bor and document his story so that Bor's unique outlook on life could be an inspiration for others to draw strength from. There were many talented and dedicated people that helped make this dream come true. On Tuesday, December 3rd at 11:25 p.m., the premiere of BOR the film will be broadcasted by BNN VARA on channel NPO 3.
The film has been submitted to more than 350 international film festivals with the goal of reaching a larger audience and creating international awareness for EB.
Bor’s last wish has finally came true: ‘To inspire as many people as possible with his story’.
