In Brief: Recent Innovations Fueling Transformational Shifts in the Cosmetics Industry
A. New Palm Oil-free Diol for Natural Cosmetics
Hamburg-based raw material specialist Cosphatec has expanded its portfolio with the launch of a new palm oil-free ingredient, Cosphaderm Propanediol natural palm free. This innovative addition, compliant with COSMOS and NATRUE standards, offers a natural alternative for use in skin and hair care products.
Cosphaderm® Propanediol, a natural palm oil-free preservative, is a pure, transparent, and colorless diol derived from the fermentation of non-GMO corn. Due to its polar character, this ingredient is known for its excellent water solubility, making it an effective moisturizer and humectant in cosmetic formulations.
This product is ideal for cosmetic formulators and manufacturers aiming to eliminate petrochemical or palm oil-derived ingredients, paving the way for more sustainable business practices.
B. Micro-bristle Technology in Geka’s New Perfume-Gel Solution: Precision Cosmetic Applicators
A German manufacturer known for precision cosmetic applicators has introduced a cutting-edge perfume-gel solution that leverages its advanced micro-bristle technology. This new applicator, based on the "fusion-APPLICATOR," features 50 delicate micro bristles with a tip diameter of just 0.08 mm, designed for hygienic and precise application of fragrances. The applicator's bulk reservoir ensures optimal dosage, allowing users to enjoy a soft, silky texture that releases intense and vibrant scents with long-lasting persistence due to the high concentration of essences.
C. New Study Finds Bacteria in 35% of Tattoo and Permanent Makeup Inks
A recent study has revealed that approximately 35% of commercial tattoo and permanent makeup inks tested are contaminated with bacteria. This research, published in the journal Applied and Environmental Microbiology, was conducted by scientists from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and marks the first investigation into the presence of anaerobic bacteria in these inks.
The researchers discovered both aerobic and anaerobic bacteria thriving in the deeper layers of the skin. While analyzing 75 tattoo and permanent makeup inks from 14 undisclosed U.S.-based domestic and international manufacturers throughout the study, they identified bacterial contamination in 26 samples from 10 manufacturers, including some labeled as sterile. Many of the detected strains were deemed 'possibly pathogenic,' meaning they have the potential to cause disease. Notably, the study found common bacteria such as Staphylococcus saprophyticus, known to cause UTIs and, in rare cases, meningitis, and Cutibacterium acnes, associated with acne.

Given these findings, it is crucial to conduct a skin patch test before undergoing any tattoo or permanent makeup procedures to check for potential allergic reactions to the inks and chemicals involved.
