Busting Myths: EV Charging Won't Overload the Grid

"EVs will crash the grid!" You've probably heard this myth circulating, stoking fears that a sudden increase of electric vehicles will overwhelm our electrical infrastructure. But let's shed some light on the truth, shall we?

The truth is, the transition to EVs is happening gradually, with companies like Zero Impact Solutions giving utilities ample time to upgrade the grid to keep pace with adoption. Several studies have crunched the numbers on the gap between current and future power needs:

  • A 2019 U.S. DRIVE report estimated that with medium to high EV uptake, we'd need to add 15-27 TWh of grid capacity annually by 2050.
  • E3, GridLab, and UC Berkeley projected in 2021 that if all light-duty vehicle sales were EVs by 2030, peak load would hit 113 GW in 2035 and 167 GW in 2050.
  • PWC forecasts average annual consumption rising from 24 TWh in 2023 to 468 TWh by 2040 - an 1850% increase, but still only 9-12% of projected U.S. grid capacity.
  • Rystad Energy expects transportation power use to grow from 18.3 TWh in 2023 to 131 TWh by 2030.

While those numbers might sound daunting, remember that electrical grids are constantly being maintained, repaired, and upgraded every year, EVs or not. Utility providers have proven themselves remarkably adept at planning for the future.

What's more, the rise of new technologies means that EVs won’t just be passive consumers on the grid–they can actively help manage electricity supply and demand. These technologies include:

  • Smart charging tech
  • Battery storage, and
  • Vehicle-to-grid capabilities.

At Zero Impact Solutions, we're working every day to build out the charging infrastructure that will support the electric transition. With thoughtful planning and innovative solutions, the grid will be more than ready to handle an electric future.

Zero Impact Solutions can take your electric dreams and make them a reality. Want charging stations for your customers’ vehicles? We’ve got you covered with level-2 chargers for a reliable but slower solution. Or you can bring out the big guns with the level-3 chargers, the DC fast chargers that are faster than level-2s.

But that’s not all! Zero Impact Solutions can also add battery electric storage (BESS) to your project, which helps ease the grid during peak power periods. It can also ease your bank account; BESS systems can take electricity from the grid when it’s cheapest and return electricity when it is most expensive.

And if you have a grid-capable smart vehicle fleet, you can also add vehicle-to-home, vehicle-to-building, or vehicle-to-grid capabilities to the structure of your business through Zero Impact Solutions’ V2G smart charging machines!

So the next time someone tries to claim the sky is falling because of EV charging, you can confidently bust that myth. The road ahead is electric, and the grid will be right there with us!
