Can Your Resume Stand Up to HER?

Can Your Resume Stand Up to HER?

I have been reading resumes for decades. In fact, friends and clients ask me to look at finalists for a particularly sensitive role. Few ask me to look at the stacks of resumes. One attorney, a close person friend, had the same secretary for over 15 years. When she retired, my friend called in a panic.

She said,

“I have all of these resumes and don’t know where to begin. Can you take a look?”

I asked her to sort the resumes down to the top 10. I looked at the top 5.

Then, I gave my pronouncements.

“Candidate 1 will ruin your life. She will take the job to gain access to your film and Television producers. When she finds the right opportunity, she will leave skid marks as she flies out of here. Candidate 2 has worked for the boss from hell for 15 years. She would have been a good candidate if she walked off the job after a few weeks. She’s a member of a tribe. Odds are, she will turn you into a boss from hell. I would meet with candidate 4 first.”

“Why?”

“Because she derives her value from taking meticulous care of others. Most likely, she will arrive early, leave late, get your car washed during lunch, and if it breaks down, push it to the nearest repair shop.”

No matter how hard we try, resumes either tell or story perfectly or they don’t say anything at all. But we miss the point. The most important message we want to give all employers is what we know about them. Developing the skills to learn about each employer and potential hiring manager is one of the biggest boosts in a job-based career.

But, I cannot count the number of sales meetings or interviews where I ask,

“What do you know about us?”

Workskunk resumes is about developing a marketing piece that not only makes it easy for someone to “get you,” it artfully shows the reader what you know about them and how you could be the best solution to their problem.
