The case for remote working

The case for remote working

In November 2017, the company that I had happily worked for, for four years closed down leading to redundancies across the board. As is often the way with redundancies it gave me the chance to reflect on what it is that I really want from a job.

After much soul searching, I realised my dream job is a creative and varied copywriting role that caters for remote working. The case for telecommuting is growing, some fortune 500 companies (IBM for example) insist on staff working remotely most of the time. The truth is, I’ve always worked better from home. There are far fewer distractions and I can achieve the same productivity levels in half the time.

Here are some of the reasons I can see for more home working:

·     Remote workers are more engaged in their work, according to Harvard Business Review

·     Working from home reduces office costs

·     Employees who work from home take fewer sick days

·     Without a commute, remote workers can work for longer

·     Companies can hire the perfect candidate regardless of their geographical position

What are your thoughts?

I believe that when it's not absolutely necessary for employees to be physically in the office, then the option should be there for them to work elsewhere, be it at home, at a workspace, in the library, wherever. I think Microsoft employs this method, or at least they do here in Munich. The key thing is maintaining productivity. So as long as that doesn't drop, there oughtn't be a problem with remote working. I get that sometimes, or even often, being in the office is required and that face-to-face meetings are necessary, but I think the option should be available for when no actual face time is needed. PS I am the opposite to you, so I'd probably choose to be in the office over staying at home to work. That said, my office is but 15 minutes on the bike away, whereas in a city like London a short bike ride probably isn't the usual trip to work!
