Sweden’s Central Bank to Test Use of CBDC for Retail Payments

Sweden’s central bank, Sveriges Riksbank, is partnering with Israel, Norway, and the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) to test Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) for international retail payments. According to the Riksbank press release, the Project Icebreaker partnership will extend till the end of 2022, with a final report presented in Q1 2023. Also;

  • The first-ever international project will research the technology, architecture, and design choices and trade-offs and explore related policy questions.
  • The project is the BIS's fourth international CBDC program — others include Project Jura, mBridge, and Project Dunbar.
  • The BIS corroborated with Hong Kong, United Arab Emirates, Thailand, and mainland China to launch the just concluded pilot of the mBridge project. The project facilitated over $22 million worth of transactions.

According to the Atlantic Council, up to 105 countries have explored CBDCs. Ten out of this number have fully rolled out their CBDCs. The council also projected CBDCs to tackle seamless full-scale cross-border payments. Meanwhile, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) speculated that CBDCs could reduce costs for cross-border payments.

Although CBDCs are gaining momentum across the globe, centralization, security, and privacy are among the concerns that heavily make a case against them.

Celsius Creditor Committee Objects To Equity Holders' Motion

No alt text provided for this image

Last week, two Celsius equity holders, WestCap and Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec (CDPQ), filed a motion for a separate committee to represent equity holders. The filing was based on the alleged unequal representation of equity holders' interests in the ongoing bankruptcy proceedings.

However, the lawyer for the Unsecured Creditor Committee (UCC) said that they would oppose the motion and convince the other creditor groups to do the same. According to the lawyer, having another committee will incur more expenses for the account holders sponsoring the case. Therefore, the UCC intends to engage more with the other parties, including the equity holders, to ensure equal representation of interests.

SEC Sues Another Crypto Project and Its "Market Maker" For Alleged Market Manipulation

The U.S SEC is suing Hydrogen and Market Maker Moonwalkers Trading, with the CEOs of the two companies. The commission accuses Hydrogen of market manipulation using Moonwalkers Trading and selling its Hydro Tokens using airdrops and bounty programs while funding its project in 2018. Though Hydrogen didn't use an initial coin offering (ICO), the commission still accused the firm of offering unregistered securities.

While many crypto enthusiasts assume token airdrops are immune to federal securities laws, the SEC insists that companies cannot avoid the securities laws using compensations, bounties, or other similar methods.

Lazarus Hacker Group Targets macOS Users Through Crypto Jobs

  • The latest targets of the infamous North Korean Lazarus Hacker Group are Apple’s macOS users.
  • According to SentinelOne – the cybersecurity firm that discovered the attack – the hacker group sent unsolicited false crypto jobs adverts for the Crypto.com exchange on LinkedIn.
  • However, the fake PDF documents were infested with malware targeted at the mac operating system.
  • SentinelOne recognized the malware as similar to last month’s fake Coinbase job postings used by the same Lazarus Group to deceive macOS users into downloading malware.
  • These two hacking incidents, nicknamed Operation In(ter)ception, fall under the hacking campaign — Operation Dream Job.
