Celebrating Women in Technology

Growing up, I didn't see very many female leaders on TV. All I remember is Margaret Thatcher, Queen Elizabeth and Barbara Walters. I'm really dating myself!

Fast forward several decades to this week, I had the honor of hosting the very first episode of The CG Hour, sponsored by Cyber Group. We kicked off with the topic of Women in Technology - Falling Behind or Gaining Ground? Lisa Jordan, Shoba Krishnamurthy and Jennifer Richardson were the technology leaders on the panel and we explored the history, education, career and future of women in technology. Here are some takeaways from the session:

  1. From Shoba - Be willing to constantly learn and grow. It's okay to make mistakes. Learn fast. Owe up to your mistakes and be honest. Put in the hard work because nothing comes easy.
  2. From Jennifer - Find a mentor who can help you navigate your career. Ask someone you respect, "how did you get to where you are?" Or make yourself available to other women and become a mentor yourself.
  3. From Lisa - Quiet that inner critic in your head that says "you're not enough." There's going to be days when you're the only woman or only technologist in the meeting. Be confident in your value.
  4. From myself - We can't dream what we don't see. If young girls don't see women leaders online or in the media, they see no one that looks like them in technology careers.

We have a duty to share our voices, our expertise and our messages publicly to inspire the next generation of female leaders.

What are your top video production and editing questions?

When it comes to video, content is obviously important. But I also get asked lots of video production and editing questions. For this week's guest, I invited Andy Owen, Video Manager at TechSmith to join me on my live show, Creator Tips, Tools & Tales. TechSmith makes the popular software products, Camtasia and SnagIt.

Camtasia also happens to be my favorite video editing tool! I've been using it for over a decade, back when it was mainly for screen recording corporate training screen videos.

Andy and I discussed:

- Beginner & advanced video production tips

- Beginner & advanced video editing tips

- Comparing video editing tools

- How to create repeatable processes/templates for video editing

Psst, want to know where I get content advice? Well, from the Godfather of Content Marketing, of course! His name is Joe Pulizzi and he is the founder of the Content Marketing Institute. His Content Inc. book and model are a great resource to building a content-based business.

He's also the founder of The Tilt, which provides education and training to help content creators build financially successful businesses. He and his team create a newsletter that comes out twice a week and it is one of few email newsletters that I read, word for word, every issue. If you're ready to monetize your content, you need to read his newsletter.

There you go. My secret is out. This is not a sponsored post but I do have an affiliate link to sign up for his super valuable newsletter here. Let me know what you think!

Let's connect on LinkedIn if you're new to my work. You can also find a more personal side of me on Instagram and YouTube. Interested in learning how to define your unique brand and create engaging videos? Check out my online course here.
