The iconic Cuban singer Celia Cruz, known to the world as the Queen of Salsa, has made history once again by becoming the first Afro-Latina to appear on U.S. currency. The United States Mint has officially released a commemorative quarter featuring Celia Cruz as part of its American Women Quarters Program™ for 2025. This release not only honors her incredible contributions to music and culture but also cements her legacy as a trailblazer for Afro-Latinas everywhere.

A Global Superstar with Humble Beginnings

Celia Cruz’s journey to stardom began in the humble neighborhoods of Havana, Cuba, where she was born in 1925. Despite facing societal expectations to pursue a more traditional career, Cruz was drawn to music from an early age. Her undeniable talent and vibrant personality quickly set her apart, and by the 1950s, she had become the lead singer of La Sonora Matancera, one of Cuba’s most famous orchestras. However, her career was not without challenges—leaving Cuba after the revolution, Cruz faced exile and the pain of separation from her homeland. Yet, she turned this adversity into fuel for her music, which resonated with exiles and Latinos around the world.

A Cultural Icon with a Lasting Legacy

Celia Cruz’s influence extends far beyond her music. She was a cultural ambassador who used her platform to celebrate Afro-Latina identity, blending African rhythms with Latin sounds to create a unique genre that continues to inspire artists today. Throughout her six-decade career, she recorded over 70 albums, earned 23 gold records, and received countless awards, including three GRAMMY® and four Latin GRAMMY® awards.

Cruz’s signature catchphrase, “¡Azúcar!” (Sugar!), became more than just a slogan—it symbolized her zest for life and her ability to turn life’s hardships into something sweet. Her vibrant stage presence, flamboyant costumes, and powerhouse voice made her a beloved figure not just in Latin music but around the world.

Did You Know? Interesting Facts About Celia Cruz

Celia’s First Love Was Education: Before fully committing to music, Celia Cruz considered becoming a teacher. In fact, she enrolled in the National Teachers’ College in Havana, but her passion for music eventually won out.

An Exile Who Never Forgot Her Roots: Despite her international fame, Celia Cruz never forgot her Cuban roots. She often spoke about the pain of exile, and her music served as a bridge for other Cuban exiles who found solace in her songs.

Breaking Barriers: In a male-dominated music industry, Celia Cruz shattered glass ceilings and became the most celebrated female salsa artist of all time. Her success paved the way for future generations of female musicians.

A Lasting Impact: Celia Cruz’s influence wasn’t just limited to music. She was a fashion icon known for her colorful wigs and elaborate outfits. Her sense of style continues to inspire fashion designers today.

Celia in the Smithsonian: The Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History holds an extensive collection of Celia Cruz’s personal items, including some of her most famous stage costumes. She is one of the few Latin artists to be so prominently featured in the museum.

Commemorating Celia Cruz with a Historic Quarter

The release of the Celia Cruz quarter is part of the U.S. Mint’s American Women Quarters Program™, which celebrates the achievements of influential women who have shaped American history. Celia Cruz stands alongside other groundbreaking figures such as Patsy Takemoto Mink and Dr. Mary Edwards Walker. This quarter is not just a piece of currency; it’s a piece of history that honors Cruz’s indelible impact on music, culture, and the Afro-Latina community.

Omer Pardillo-Cid, executor of the Celia Cruz Estate, reflects on the significance of this honor: “Celia’s life was a testament to the power of resilience, talent, and passion. To see her recognized on U.S. currency is something she would have never imagined, yet it is so fitting for someone who gave so much to the world. This quarter is a beautiful tribute to her legacy.”

A Legacy That Lives On

In addition to the release of the quarter, the Celia Cruz Estate continues to celebrate her legacy through various initiatives. Earlier this year, a commemorative album, Celia Cruz En Vivo: 100 Años de Azúcar, was released, featuring never-before-heard live recordings from the mid-1980s. This album, along with other efforts, ensures that the spirit of Celia Cruz remains alive for generations to come.

The Celia Cruz Estate also partners with institutions like Leon Medical Centers in Miami to distribute these commemorative quarters in special packaging, allowing fans to own a piece of history.
