Changing-the-Game with Tencent in Southeast Asia

As we close the book on 2024, let's flip through the pages of Tencent ’s game-changing journey across Southeast Asia — driving creativity, building cultural bridges, and strengthening economic ties across the region's creative and digital landscape.

Thailand – THACCA SPLASH Forum 2024

"Games are more than entertainment—they are cultural bridges."

In June, Tencent participated in the Thailand Creative Culture Agency (THACCA)’s first-ever soft power forum, exploring the role of video games in driving cultural and economic innovation.

Yee Ler Lau , Head of Public Affairs (APAC) at Tencent, shared more on how Tencent and its partner studios' gaming titles can provide the ideal platform for collaboration with global brands to reshape marketing strategies, reach new consumer segments, foster cultural exchanges, and create new experiences for players and fans alike.

The forum also spotlighted how games can serve as cultural ambassadors. At a recent Tencent esports tournament in Thailand, Southeast Asian players and fans were introduced to traditional Thai products like clothing and herbal inhalers—immersing themselves in Thai culture through fun, interactive experiences.

Malaysia – Mini Esports Convention

"Esports is a catalyst for economic growth and digital innovation."

In July, Tencent took center stage at Malaysia’s first Mini Esports Convention, hosted at the Parliament Building, where lawmakers and government officials explored esports’ transformative impact.

Interactive booths showcasing PUBG MOBILE and Honor of Kings demonstrated the potential of esports to drive Malaysia’s digital economy and engage the youth in skills and career development opportunities. Key attendees, including the Minister and Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports ( Kementerian Belia Dan Sukan ), experienced firsthand how esports can shape the future of innovation.

The event made it clear: esports is more than entertainment—it’s a dynamic industry connecting technology, sports, and economic progress, sparking fresh conversations about Malaysia’s digital future.

Indonesia – International Creative Industry Conference and Festival (IC Fest)

"Intellectual property (IP) is the cornerstone of creative commercial success."

In September, Tencent joined Indonesia’s IC Fest, hosted by the then- Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy , to explore the transformative power of intellectual property (IP) in the creative industries.

Nicholas Tong , Senior Legal Counsel at Tencent, shared how companies and creators can harness the full potential of IP to drive innovation and fuel cross-industry collaborations. Standout examples included local partnerships with Indomie and Gojek, showcasing how co-branded merchandise and in-game features amplify brand visibility and business growth opportunities.

The event underscored Tencent’s commitment to supporting Indonesia’s creative ecosystem. By blending local culture with innovation, Tencent demonstrated how IP can fuel economic growth and tourism and connect local ideas with global opportunities.
