ChatGPT: Maintenance and Reliability Game Changer

It is no longer news that chatGPT is disrupting everywhere! This chat bot deployed late November 2022 hit the online waves with a bang and is doing a lot of incredible things across all industries.

Even though there are few limitations to what it can or cannot do, from what we can see, it can do 80% thereabout of many things! That is huge and cannot be brushed aside.

When last week, I introduced ChatGPT to one of our Industrial Controls Technicians to employ it in the use of her troubleshooting at work, she didn’t take me serious for about a week. She thought it was just one of those fancy online thing that just showed up but lo and behold, she introduced it to her team and they jointly deployed it to troubleshoot a faulty system.

Do you know the outcome? ChatGPT gave them the exact solution that they needed. It was implemented and faulty systems came back to live. Gone are the days of waiting on someone to show you things and researching here and there. At your fingertips in maximum of two minutes, you can get answers to anything on Maintenance Troubleshooting and execute fast. And that is just the beginning.

The level of disruption of this Artificial Intelligence to our industry is better imagined in a few years from now. I foresee that we may not need too many Maintenance SMEs or Advisors to tell us how to troubleshoot or direct us on possible causes and resolution. The machine will take over and will even do it better than us! So what are we going to do to stay relevant, we must creatively look for what machine cannot do and begin to do them before it’ll eventually take over!

The game changer for asset intensive industry like oil and gas, manufacturing, power plant etc. will happen when all the data that we store in silos today within our companies are powered by artificial intelligence and they start to prescribe to us what we can do for our industry specific solution using our specific data. That will be amazing and a great changer for the entire industry. 

For now, everything is becoming a data world and the more we begin to store those data, leveraging the power of artificial intelligence to do the interpretation in a real time environment will draw us closer to the future that we have been dreaming of years ago!

There is no doubt that the future is here with us. ChatGPT is just a tip of the iceberg. The earlier you begin to leverage it in your Maintenance efforts and applications, the better for you.
