ChatGPT's Voice Gets an Upgrade
OpenAI is enhancing ChatGPT's communication capabilities by expanding its Advanced Voice Mode (AVM) to a larger group of paid subscribers. This audio feature, aimed at creating more natural conversations with the AI, will be rolled out to Plus and Teams users this week, with Enterprise and Edu users following suit next week.
AVM now sports a fresh, visually appealing design. A blue animated sphere replaces the previous black dots, offering a more interactive and engaging experience. The updated feature will appear as a pop-up next to the voice icon in the ChatGPT app.
OpenAI has been busy adding multiple enhancements to AVM while users awaited the wider release. These include Custom Instructions, Memory, five new voices, and improved accent recognition. A touch of humor has also been added: ChatGPT can apologize for being late in over 50 languages.
With the addition of Arbor, Maple, Sol, Spruce, and Vale, ChatGPT now boasts nine voices, providing users with greater choice and personalization options. This brings ChatGPT closer to the number of voices offered by Google's Gemini Live. The nature-themed voice names hint at the natural interaction that AVM aims to achieve.
Notable omissions from this release are the Sky voice and the video and screen sharing capabilities previously demonstrated. OpenAI has stated it has made several improvements based on feedback from the limited alpha test, including enhanced accent understanding, faster and smoother conversations, and reduced glitches.
AVM will also support two popular customization features: Custom Instructions for tailored responses and Memory for contextually relevant conversations.

While the broader rollout of AVM is underway, OpenAI noted that the feature is currently unavailable in certain regions, including the EU, the U.K., and several other European countries.
