Clicks or Bricks: Creating A Profitable Online Business
The only thing worse than postponing your business plans is wasting months – or even years – of time and money because no one was honest with you about what was really required to succeed.
With the popularity of online shopping, someone with an idea for a new retail business no longer has to open a storefront. That does not mean, however, that there is no longer a need for retail stores or that all business ideas work well online.
If you are looking to open a store, you must consider your business model or vehicle, product, the consumer and your overall business goals when decided whether a retail storefront or online store will work best for you.
There's a huge misconception about opening Online Stores.
The truth couldn't be simpler and yet almost everyone misses this...
1. Online Stores are Much Cheaper to Open Than Retail Storefronts
In general, opening a business as an online store is much cheaper than a retail storefront. Unlike a retail storefront, there is no rent to pay or other utility bills directly related to the store, except for web hosting and technical support.
You do not have to decorate the inside of the store, purchase inside and outside signage or display units. Since you can manage the work yourself, you do not have to hire additional employees.
With an online store, your costs are directly related to your website, shipping and accepting online payments. You must pay for your desired domain name and may pay someone develop your website and e-commerce platform, which can be expensive, but is less expensive than opening a retail storefront.
2. Customer Prefer to Touch the Inventory
For high-value items such as designer clothing, antiques, jewelry, furniture and cars, a retail storefront may appeal more to customers and generate a higher profit margin on individual items. Some customers are looking for the experience of shopping, and prefer to see, touch and test items before they buy.
In addition to the price of items that you can sell, you must consider the number of items you wish to sell. A retail storefront will perform better for a business that sells a select number of products, while an online store may work better for a business that carries an extensive selection.
3. The Competition
Anyone who wants to open a business should examine the competition before jumping into the process. With an online business, the amount of instant competition is much greater than with a retail storefront.
When you want to open a retail storefront, you can easily survey an area and determine what other stores are selling the products you want to offer or choose to open in a location where those stores do not exist.
Online, there are usually multiple businesses selling the product you offer and many of them are already established, making it difficult for a new start-up to break in and find success. If what you are offering is not unique, then a retail storefront will be more successful at trying to earn new customers than trying to break into an already saturated online market.
4. Different Marketing Approaches
Building a customer base is one of the most-essential components of starting a successful retail business or online or offline.
With a retail store, the potential customer base is limited to the surrounding area.
Online, the customer base is vast.
Once you open up a retail store, your options for attracting new customers are limited. You are confined to the retail space that you chose and changing logos, signs, shelving and the overall marketing strategy can be expensive.
When you work online, changing signs and logos takes mere minutes and you can quickly and easily change the products that you sell and the way you present them on your website
Let’s Clear the Air on Starting a Store Front Business or Online Store
1. If You Need to Make Money Fast
If you need to make money quickly, starting a Store Front Business or eCommerce online store business is a really bad idea. Opening a Store Front Business or an online store is an involved process that takes months to research and launch, and usually years to build into a significant and sustainable income.
If you need extra cash to pay this month’s rent or just don’t have enough to make ends meet, your best bet is to increase your income through a traditional job for the short term.
This doesn’t mean you have to resign yourself to being employed for the rest of your life, but it’s what you’ll realistically need to do to meet pending obligations.
Anyone who tells you that you can start quickly making significant money with little work online – especially with a pre-built “system” – is selling you a pipe dream. Like all legitimate businesses, a Store Front Business or eCommerce online stores take time to grow.
Additionally, you’ll need to make decisions in the best long-term interest of your business, which are usually opposed to short-term financial needs. If you’re using every cent of profits to pay bills, you can’t afford to re-invest in your business.
2. You Need a Guarantee
I repeatedly hear:
“How can I be sure that this will work? I can’t afford to waste time on an idea/niche that isn’t successful.”
In the world of entrepreneurship, there are no guarantees despite what that slick-looking training programs would have you believe. The only place to get a guaranteed return for your time is – you guessed it! – with a traditional job. Or with the 180-day personal satisfaction guarantee offered by companies like Amway.
Being an entrepreneur means acting without that guarantee of success or profitability.
You do it strategically and with a well-thought-out and researched plan, but at the end of the day you move forward despite your doubts.
With every business I’ve ever started, I’ve had doubts and reservations as to whether it would be successful or not. And while some ended up doing nicely, others didn’t fare as well. But I’d never know if I didn’t overcome my fears and take the plunge.
Educate yourself, research, agonize, and then decide despite your reservations. It’s the only option you have. And if you can’t afford for something not to work (i.e., if you’re “betting the farm” on a venture’s success), then you definitely shouldn’t be starting it without proper education and training.
3. Must Be Able to Take a Step Back
Starting a store front business or an online business requires a sacrifice of some kind, usually in the form of time or cash. You need to have one of these two currencies! If you’re not able to invest either, you won’t be able to build a viable business.
Every business success story has a tandem tale of investment, sacrifice or temporary setback.
For me, it was working like crazy and saving for two years like a miser so I could afford to quit my job and ramp up my business.
Even Bill Gates had to drop out of Harvard to take a shot at starting Microsoft – something that, at the time, must have looked like a major step back.
Moving forward always requires taking a temporary and sometimes painful step back – it’s the only way to make real progress.
4. If You’re Not Web Savvy
It has become significantly easier to start a business online today, even compared to just a few years ago. Services like Shopify, Magento, and BigCommerce have made it possible to get a store online without programming experience and with little tech knowledge. But if you’d describe yourself as “not web savvy”, you’re likely going to struggle.
Being “web savvy” is simply the price of admission for trying to get a viable business online. If you have a hard time setting up an email account, doing online banking or using Facebook, you’re going to become incredibly frustrated trying to get a store online, even with all the easy-to-use tools available.
As simple as these tools have become, they do require a basic level of online competency, as will most other resources you’ll need to build/market/operate your store.
5. Don’t Get Discouraged
Here’s the good news: Even if you’re not currently in a strong position to start your store front business, or online store, it’s always possible to get there.
That might require prioritizing your finances to become more financially secure by leveraging an existing job or getting up to speed with basic web technologies. The circumstances above are not set in stone or hard-wired character attributes. All of them can be changed with time and effort.
And if you’re a bit older and outside the traditional 20-something stereotype for online entrepreneurs, please don’t get discouraged or interpret this post to mean that you can’t be successful!
I spoke with a friend and coach last week who told me of a 70-something couple he works with who had recently launched a networking business. And I’ve personally received numerous emails from folks 60+ who are pursuing an Amway business from a position of strength and competency.
The bottom line? Make sure you’re starting a business in the right position – and with the right expectations – and you’ll be much more likely to succeed.
6. An Alternative Model: Amway
If you’re just starting out, one less risky alternative is to start an Amway business.
It’s not for everyone, but it’s definitely a less risky way to get some experience learn from people and companies that are making it work in the real world.

When my coach first told me about this method of building a business, it was simple but not obvious.
For instance:
After all, Amazon alone captured 50% of online sales last year. Jet.com and Wal-Mart.com are working together to win the price wars...Target entering the ring with their own promotions and shipping speeds...
There's just no way to compete with these giants.
But that's where I was wrong.
"These stores aren't our competition".
You see, stores like Amazon and Wal-Mart rely on stocking enough products, across enough genres that customers will continue to return for everything they need.
Something for themselves, something for the kids, and something for Grandma.
Even though they move a lot of product, a large percentage never leaves the warehouse.
But my mentor and coach recommended a different business model. He told me the Amway businesses has none of the traditional business challenges or online store challenges.
He said, "With Amway there are the major differences:"
1. No Major Investment. It is substantially cheaper to get started than a storefront or typical online business
