Climate Impact X - March Newsletter 2024

CIX is pleased to share that we have expanded our offerings to now include Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs), providing you with a comprehensive suite of environmental solutions under one roof. Read on to learn more about our new RECs offering.

Last week, in commemoration of International Day of Forests on 21 March, our chief executive Mikkel Larsen took the opportunity to explain why we must keep funding the local communities who protect forests – and how carbon credits are a proven way to do this by giving people realistic alternative sources of income to deforestation. Finally, our Director of Supply, Bryan McCann , shares his thoughts on the latest Beyond Value Chain Mitigation (BVCM) guidance from the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi). Read here.

Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) now available via CIX

Many businesses are looking to switch to renewable energy to mitigate their climate impact. However, the upfront capital costs required and space constraints can pose challenges to making commitments to energy transition on a large scale.

RECS are an effective way for businesses to reduce their Scope 2 emissions within budget, while planning longer term energy transition. They are a straightforward way to support your company's sustainability goals.

RECs represent the environmental attributes of electricity generated from renewable sources such as solar, wind, hydropower, biogas, biomass, hydrothermal, geothermal or landfill gas projects. They can be used to validate the consumption of electricity from low- or zero-emission sources, enabling companies to make certified claims of energy reduction activities (for Scope 2 emissions).

Here’s why you should choose CIX for RECs:

1.  One stop shop - Now you can use CIX to source, buy and retire RECs for Scope 2 emissions, and carbon credits for Scope 1 and 3 emissions.

2.  Internationally recognised standards - Rest easy knowing RECs offered by CIX meet internationally recognised certification standards.

3. Dedicated support - Our team is on hand of help you select, source and retire RECs aligned to your sustainability and ESG goals.

Last week, we commemorated the International Day of Forests. Our chief executive Mikkel Larsen took the opportunity to explain why we must keep funding the local communities who protect forests – and how carbon credits are a proven way to do this by giving people realistic alternative sources of income to deforestation.

In his article, he sets out five main points:

  1. Preserving standing forests is far more effective than building new ones
  2. Forest preservation and reforestation are part of the same cycle
  3. Projects that help preserve forests are highly complex
  4. We need solutions to preserve forests that are not under immediate threat
  5. The challenge to keep trees standing depends on the nature of the threat

The Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi) recently published two reports aimed at accelerating the adoption and implementation of Beyond Value Chain Mitigation (BVCM). BVCM is defined as “mitigation action or investments that fall outside a company’s value chain, including activities that avoid or reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, or remove and store GHGs from the atmosphere.”

Our Director of Supply, Bryan, shares his thoughts on the latest guidance and why, while helpful, it ultimately stops short of empowering companies to act now. Click here  to read.
