The Coaching Approach: A movement to reimagine technical assistance in global development

There have been many calls over the years to reimagine traditional technical assistance models and find better ways to support country-led change. Country leaders say they want:

  • To drive their own agenda and design their own solutions to complex systems challenges, while receiving support to navigate change processes.
  • To be able to access strong local and regional expertise, while also accessing global knowledge and peer experience that can be adapted to their context.

The Coaching Approach responds to this by focusing on the importance of facilitating a robust, country-led process. This approach emphasizes working through existing infrastructure and processes, not creating parallel systems. And it draws on country and regional experts to support country change processes, supported by global coaches and mentors as needed.

The Experts Database: A networking platform for health systems experts and institutions in Africa and Asia

Historically, technical assistance for low- and middle-income countries has been provided by institutions and experts who are not from the regions in which they are working.

The Coaching Approach aims to change this — putting country and regional expertise at the center of health system strengthening efforts, thereby ensuring technical assistance is delivered by experts who understand the country context, have relatable experiences with similar challenges, and can provide ongoing, continuous support.

Many in our field have embraced this idea, but finding expertise and matching it with demand can be challenging. The Experts Database solves this challenge.

The Experts Database is a publicly accessible, searchable online networking platform — like LinkedIn, but specifically for health systems experts and institutions in Africa and Asia. The platform helps elevate the profiles of experts and institutions from the countries and regions that are requesting support for technical assistance, while also fostering a more transparent approach to matching country demands with expertise.

The platform currently has more than 300 profiles, is growing quickly and garnering a lot of attention. A high-level official at the World Bank had this to say about it:

“The Experts Database addresses a common problem we have when trying to identify experts. I currently need health systems experts for a project in Africa, so I did a quick search on [the] platform and found 8 professionals that matched my criteria!”
