Coffee Trends In 2022

7 Coffee trends for 2022

Research has found coffee is the most popular drink worldwide, with around two billion cups consumed every day.

Discovering better techniques, pushing creativity, and meeting new needs, the world of coffee is ever-changing. What does this mean for 2022, and are there any trends on the horizon?

We’ve pulled together seven trends that are said to be shaping coffee and the coffee industry this year.

The 7 trends to look out for...

Non-Dairy Milk

One-third of British people now only drink non-dairy milk, research  suggests. So much so that Starbucks  reported shortages of their oat alternative, Oatly, last April.

Oat, soy, and nut milk are just some of the other choices people are pouring into their coffee. Overall, it can be a healthier option  than dairy milk with 1 cup holding only 60-90 calories.

Starbucks has five dairy alternatives in stores, totally free of charge, including their own nut blend. It looks like they’re ahead of the curve!

Selecta has it's own dairy alternative too. Pelican Rouge’s vegan PLNT line offers coffee toppings, cappuccino and chocolate drinks, which are rich and creamy and healthy alternatives to dairy.

What’s more, these oat- and coconut-based products are better for the planet too. After all, cow milk production emits 3 times more CO2 than oat milk. And dairy milk production requires 8 times the water and 7 times the land of oat milk production.

Coffee Bags

Inspired by the nation's favourite, the teabag. Coffee bags are the new, time-saving trend hitting the scene in 2022.

Sometimes the hustle of day-to-day life leaves us with less time, especially when it comes to making great coffee. You might not have time to grind your beans at home or wait in line for your barista to whip something up.

Just like the ease of making a cup of tea, you can dunk your coffee bag in and let it brew. The longer you leave it, the stronger the taste. These are ideal for those on the

move who don't want to sacrifice great-tasting coffee for time.

 Canned/ Snap Chilled Coffee

Canned coffee is becoming a staple in the grab-and-go market as there are no additional costs for retailers to include these in fridges and vending machines.

The ready-to-go coffee is a quick, takeaway option perfect for lunches.

Brands such as Starbucks have been on this trend for a while when they began offering bottled frappuccinos.

Flash Brew or Snap Chilled is freshly brewed coffee that is quickly chilled. It’s a Japanese-style iced coffee with a method of brewing with no chilling time needed.

This style of cold-brew coffee is slowly replacing iced coffee with its quick chilling and intense flavours. Not only this but there’s no need to mess around with ice cubes that essentially end up diluting your drink.

Dalgona Coffee

Dalgona, or whipped coffee, has become more and more popular on social media, especially during Covid-19, and there seems to be no stopping it in 2022.

Unlike regular coffee, it stands out because of its frothy topping, shooting to the top of the trends thanks to no other than TikTok. The name “Dalgona” comes from the Korean “달구나” which translates roughly to “it’s sweet”.

Simple to make with just 3 ingredients, no wonder this aesthetically pleasing drink is a trend to look out for.

Coffee Subscriptions

Our recent work-from-home culture means coffee at home is becoming the new norm. This new way of living is leading to the growth in coffee subscriptions.

Great-tasting, craft coffee delivered to your door. Who wouldn’t find that appealing?

The partnership of high-quality coffee and not having to move a muscle is proving to be very popular following the pandemic.

Not only in the home market is the subscription model proving enticing, but coffee shops have found it a boost following lockdown.

Pret a Manger launched its in-shop subscription ‘YourPret Barista’, and on the first day, the scheme had already topped 15,000 subscribers.

Sustainability

We’re all becoming more conscious about what we consume.

A study found that 43% of global consumers consider how ethical, environmentally friendly, and socially responsible a product is before buying.

There is so much to consider with sustainable coffee. How it’s farmed, harvested, and if the farmers are paid a fair wage, to name just a few.

The simple fact is consumers want their coffee sustainably packaged as well as ethically sourced and produced.

Flavoured coffee beans

2022 is said to see the rise of the flavoured coffee bean.

Over the last 2 years, the focus on our health has certainly come to the forefront. We want to continue enjoying our pumpkin spice and toffee nut lattes, but how do we do this without added sugar and artificial colouring?

Roasters are starting to add flavouring oils to their coffee beans to reflect flavours such as nuts, spices, and fruits.

Adding syrup to your coffee can add 17 grams of sugar to your cup alone! The flavouring oils on the other hand, add no sugar, they just enhance the taste!

We hoped this helped and you can see what’s going to take 2022 by storm in the coffee industry.

You can find out more about the coffee machines and brands we offer here . You can also read our approach to Sustainability and aims to make the coffee from our Roastery, Pelican Rouge, fully certified by the end of 2022.
