The Corona Virus in Context with Other Diseases

In providing the following data, I am not seeking to minimize the danger of COVID-19. Rather, placing it in the context of other life-threatening diseases offers a larger perspective that I fear is being lost.

COVID-19

As of this afternoon, the following data are available concerning COVID-19:[1]

·        Global: Total confirmed cases as of 7 p.m. ET: 718,685 — Total deaths: 33,881 — Total recoveries: 149,076.

·        U.S.: Leads the world in cases. Total confirmed cases as of 7 p.m. ET: 139,675 — Total deaths: 2,436 — Total recoveries: 2,661.

OTHER DISEASES

Influenza: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that during the 2019-2019 influenza season, there were “35.5 million people getting sick with influenza, 16.5 million people going to a health care provider for their illness, 490,600 hospitalizations, and 34,200 deaths from influenza.” The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that across the world, “annual influenza epidemics result in about 3-5 million cases of severe illness and about 250,000 to 500,000 deaths.”[2]

Pneumonia: The American Thoracic Society estimates that about one million Americans seek treatment for pneumonia annually, of whom roughly 50,000 die. Max Roser of Oxford University writes that worldwide, “2.56 million people died from pneumonia in 2017. Almost a third of all victims were children younger than 5 years, it is the leading cause of death for children under five.”[3]

Sexually Transmitted Diseases: The CDC estimates “that youth ages 15-24 make up just over one quarter of the sexually active population, but account for half of the 20 million new sexually transmitted infections that occur in the United States each year.”[4]

Malaria: The WHO states that in 2017, “it was estimated that 435 000 deaths due to malaria had occurred globally, of which 403 000 deaths (approximately 93%) were in the WHO African Region. Almost 80% of all deaths in 2017 occurred in 17 countries in the WHO African Region and India.”[5]
