Countdown to Mammoth

Countdown to Mammoth

Dear friends of carbon removal,

Do you remember the launch of Orca in September 2021? If you have been following us for a while, you might remember what an incredible milestone it was for Climeworks to switch on this first-of-its-kind facility in Iceland. Next week, the time has finally come for its big brother, Mammoth. We will officially unveil Mammoth on May 8, which will take Orca’s place as the world’s largest direct air capture and storage facility that is in commercial operation. We can’t wait!

The countdown is on

Since we broke ground in June 2022, the Climeworks team has been working tirelessly to bring Mammoth to life, including under harsh winter conditions in Iceland. Mammoth represents a step change in project management, supply chain volume, and workforce requirements, and the plant includes many innovative features that were enabled by the learnings from Orca.

Throughout the past months, we shed light on what it means to manufacture 72 collector containers, of which 12 are already installed, why we need a maintenance and process hall, and how the new CO₂ absorption tower fits into the storage process carried out by Carbfix . Keep an eye out for the official news on the Climeworks channels!

Norway: an ideal location for DAC+S

We’re excited to share that Climeworks was awarded CHF 2.2m (NOK 26m) in funding from Enova SF , the state enterprise by the Norwegian government’s Ministry of Climate and Environment ( Klima- og miljødepartementet ). As we communicated in early April, this funding will go towards a feasibility study for a multi-kiloton-capacity direct air capture and storage plant in Norway, which is the first step in validating the country’s great potential to deploy our technology.

Public policy is critical to enabling the drastic scale-up of carbon removal solutions that the world needs. The funding allocation for direct air capture is an important signal from Enova and the Norwegian government on the importance of this climate technology in the Norwegian climate strategy and its contribution to the industrial shift towards a thriving green industry.

Join us at Climeworks’ biggest event of the year

For the 5th edition of our annual flagship event, the Climeworks Direct Air Capture Summit has evolved into the Climeworks Carbon Removal Summit. With dynamic keynote presentations, interactive discussions, and hands-on workshops, the key stakeholders of the carbon removal industry are once again gathering in Zurich, Switzerland, from June 4-5.

This year, our summit will be held in person only. While the entire plenary day will be recorded, there are only a limited number of seats available at our event location. Fill in a request to join us for two days of all things carbon removal: tech leadership, policy support, integrity, market demand, and exclusive insights into Climeworks’ latest projects and developments.

1 week left! Very cool to read about the modular approach in the piece about collector containers — something I'm sure not everyone realizes is inherent to Climeworks' model.
