Covid-19 and Vaccines Development
With Covid-19 pandemic taking a toll on lives of people and impacting economies of almost every nation, many of us wonder why there can’t be a vaccine development in short time to treat this infectious disease? This article gives a quick overview of vaccines development, the challenges with current Covid-19 situation and how clinical and medical research community is responding to such challenges.
The purpose of vaccination is to evoke the body immune system to fight the disease caused by a virus or bacteria. This evocation happens only when the immune system of body perceives a reason to do so. In medical practice, this evocation is done through injecting either a weakened virus (also called live attenuation), or an inactive pathogen (also called inactivated vaccine), or a part of pathogen (conjugate vaccine) into human body. With each case, the goal is to have human body immune system attack the pathogen by developing antibodies. Sounds simple, right? Well, there is one issue here. What if the human immune system does not develop necessary antibodies? In that case, the vaccine itself can kill the human being and can defeat its true purpose. Secondly, what if the pathogen introduced causes other adverse reactions in human body?
Even successfully proven vaccines cause adverse events when introduced to new patient population. To track these instances and for necessary surveillance of adverse effects of administered, approved vaccines, department of health and human services in USA developed the vaccines adverse event reporting system (VAERS). So, to ensure that the vaccine is safe, drug regulatory authorities around the world established a strict approval process. In USA, the Food and Drug Administration require the vaccine development to go through an Investigational New Drug application process, pre-licensure vaccines trials, and biologic license application (BLA) prior to getting the vaccine in manufacturing. Moreover, the clinical research to ensure that the vaccine is safe to be introduced to human being itself takes multiple years.
By the time this article is written, its been barely four months since Covid-19 strain outbroke and spread so rapidly that globally there are already 300,000 patients suffering from this. In these circumstances, testing the actual virus, or its pathogen by conducting research may take several years. In past few years, there has been another novel approach introduced in vaccines development. This is referred as RNA vaccine. This approach works very differently. Here, the researcher studies the antibodies developed by immune system of a patient already infected with actual virus. Then the molecules of nucleic acid are developed with encoded instructions based on studied antibodies which already successfully fought the actual virus. These molecules, as a vaccine are then injected in human body. When actual virus strikes the human body, these molecules are expected to give the encoded instructions to body immune system and then immune system is expected to develop necessary antibodies to fight the virus. This is a speedy and relatively safe approach. This approach is possible because of significant advancements in genetic research over past two decades. Despite this, the effectiveness of this approach is questionable as majority of the RNA vaccines have been successful in animal based clinical trials only.
In case of rapid virus outbreak like Covid-19, RNA based vaccines development is the only hope given its safe, and speedy approach to develop vaccines. In United States, collaborated efforts between government and biotech companies have already started to develop RNA based vaccine to prevent and treat Covid-19 infections. For development of this vaccines, participation of qualifying patients is required. As it is evident, the qualifying patients should already be infected with Covid-19 and have been successfully fighting this virus. Speedy development of this vaccines with necessary promise of effectiveness is a humongous task. In coming months, once this vaccine is out, we will come to know about the response or success rate of such vaccine. If proved successful, this would be a major breakthrough in vaccines development and in medical research as this approach can be widely used to combat various new strains of viruses in future. In short, Covid-19 crisis may set a stage for a major innovation milestone in human history.

4yReally well explained Parag . In a simple and effective language. Let's hope this RNA based approach works
