Create The Change with Walter

Every achievement is an encouragement

Sustainability is the order of the day, especially when dealing with energy. For us in the metalworking industry this is a particularly complex task. At Walter, we like a challenge and every success encourages us to find even better solutions. With our "Create the Change" campaign, we would like to introduce you to the activities we are undertaking to ensure that Walter is as sustainable as possible.

"Green energy" - big responsibility, big impact

As a global manufacturer of metalworking cutting tools, Walter relies on a lot of energy and therefore bears a great deal of responsibility. We are committed to fulfilling this responsibility with our "Green Energy" initiative. Therefore, we purchase green energy from wind farms and solar plants for locations worldwide, including production sites in the USA and China. In doing so, we use Guarantees of Origin (GoO). This allows us to cover all the power that we do not produce ourselves with GoO and to ensure a sustainable and green supply. But we also produce green energy ourselves. More than 1000 panels deliver the power of the sun directly to our production plants in Tübingen, Münsingen and Zell.

Sustainable energy is good, less energy is even better

Energy needs to be as sustainable as possible. But the less of it we need to manufacture products of the highest quality, the better. A new, circular oil filter system at the Walter production plant in Soultz, France, which saves 1.5 million kWh of power every year, plays an important role in this. But we not only save energy, we also use it multiple times. An energy recovery process captures wasted heat from the production facilities and reuses it elsewhere. In doing so, we are constantly working on using energy more efficiently and sustainably.

Sustainable in the long-run with the "Science Based Targets" initiative (SBTi)

Since 2013 our major goal has been Net Zero. To achieve this, Walter intends to do a lot more than we already do. We have therefore joined the "Science Based Targets initiative”. Under this initiative, we are working with over 4,000 other companies worldwide to reduce emissions and meet the targets of the Paris Agreement. We are committed to cutting our direct and indirect CO2 emissions in half by 2030 and our products will help our customers to reduce their own emissions by 30 percent. We fully understand the importance of the circular economy and are working on business models that promote the reuse of products and materials to minimize the waste of resources. Sustainability and the needed change is a challenge for everyone and Walter is proud to make small and big contributions.

Speaking of small contributions, we could hardly believe how much energy we have saved since we installed LED lights. Are there supposedly small solutions with a big impact that you have discovered yourselves? Let us know!

Greetings I work in manufacturing with the current "leisure time" spent learning Titans of CNC designing and machining of parts, etc via Autodesk Fusion. This element of designing or even replacement of parts instead of finding and ordering, shipping them is exiting.
