Creating Safe and Inclusive Workplaces as a Queer Woman

🌈 As a queer woman, I've had the opportunity to work in various industries and with all kinds of people. My journey has been both challenging and rewarding. I’m a firm believer that creating a safe workplace for the LGBTQI+ community is not only essential but transformative for everyone involved.

My professional journey spans across several companies where I’ve led design teams, mentored teams, and championed diversity initiatives. Early in my career, I faced environments where I didn’t feel safe being myself. But once this changed, this acceptance allowed me to voice queer issues and push for more inclusive content and practices. I realized that my experience as a queer woman was needed in the workplace, and I took it upon myself to inform my colleagues about queer issues. Just to be clear, it is not our job to educate people; however, I decided to be that person for them, and I'm happy I did. And, although I'm a graphic designer, I decided to advocate in a more actionable way. By initiating company-wide inclusion and diversity programs, by spearheading a more diverse and inclusive editorial strategy and participating in panels on workplace diversity 💪.

One of my most positive experiences throughout my career was working in a team predominantly composed of LGBTQI+ members. The safety and comfort of being in an inclusive environment were palpable. This diversity brought unique perspectives, strengthening our collaborative efforts and enhancing our overall productivity. When employees feel safe, respected, and valued, they are more likely to be engaged and motivated.

My advice to all managers and employers: invest in doing the work. Learn about diversity and inclusivity, create policies that support equality, and foster open conversations. This effort is not just beneficial for the LGBTQI+ community but enriches the entire workplace culture. Taking the time to build these foundations can transform your organization into a symbol of inclusivity.

It’s not just about policies or programs but about fostering an environment where everyone can thrive. My experiences across different industries and roles have shown me the profound impact of inclusivity. Let’s continue to advocate for and build workplaces where diversity is celebrated, and everyone feels safe and valued.

And remember, work on it all year round! 🤝

Feel free to connect with me to discuss more about fostering inclusivity and diversity in the workplace. Together, we can make a difference.

Great articule and I love this quote: “When employees feel safe, respected, and valued, they are more likely to be engaged and motivated.”
