The Four Horseriders of the AI Apocalypse

No, I am not referring to AGI rising up and turning all humans into batteries a la Matrix. Instead, we have more mundane threats arising from the recent breakthroughs and subsequent proliferation of AI that are already materializing in the immediate and short-term horizon.

The four horse riders are:

AI Bias AI, meant to be objective, amplifies biases instead. It's not just about a few unfair hires; it's about systemic discrimination. AI models, trained on biased historical data, often favor male candidates and exclude certain ethnic or educational backgrounds. The result is that AI mirrors and scales our past mistakes.

Disinformation AI takes fake news to new extremes with deepfakes, bots, and AI-generated text. These tools make disinformation more convincing and harder to detect. We're already seeing sophisticated phishing and propaganda campaigns that even fool tech-savvy users, leaving us questioning everything we see and hear online.

AI Grift AI promises to solve everything, but businesses often ride the hype rather than offer real value. From overhyped startups to AI solutions for non-existent problems, the landscape is filled with vaporware. Many of these "revolutionary" products will inevitably fail, exposing the hollow promises.

Warbots Autonomous weapons, once sci-fi, are now reality. Drones and AI-driven systems that make life-or-death decisions without human input are being developed at alarming speeds. The ethical concerns are immense, especially when mistakes are made or these machines are used in unjust wars. Civilians will be the unintended casualties.

This week, we will look at some recent reports about AI-bias and discrimination in hiring.

AI-bias and discrimination in hiring

If you’re active on any professional communities or social media, you will probably have noticed an increasing number of posts and threads lamenting the current state of the job market, especially as it relates to AI and hiring practices. On the employee side, job hunters are being advised by some parties to harness AI in their effort, for example, using ChatGPT to write and enhance their resume.

On the employer side, though, recruiters are warning that they can tell if you write your resume using ChatGPT and are complaining that it has created a “sea of sameness” in job applications. The WSJ recently wrote that filtering out AI-crafted resumes has become the new recruitment challenge. The topic is controversial, even in or especially in tech, with some firms endorsing their use by applicants and others considering it cheating.

But employers are not exactly shy themselves about leveraging AI to help with the recruitment process, with upwards of 25% already using it. AI avatars are even being deployed to conduct job interviews and technical coding tests. Job applicants also have very mixed emotions about this.

Measures taken by recruiters and HR departments are also causing controversy. The majority consensus is that it is not technically feasible to reliably detect if something written has been generated using AI if even basic steps are taken to obfuscate this. And the same tools that are keeping legitimate applicants out due to overly rigid keyword matching appear to do little to stop determined abuse, as the recent case of a serial job applicant using AI to generate 4600 fraudulent discrimination claims demonstrates.

1 in 5 job seekers believe AI will increase bias in the recruitment process, and recent data not only seems to bare that out but actually seems to indicate that the issue is actually being underestimated. Workday, an HR platform that also helps with recruitment and integrates AI, was recently taken to court over discrimination.

An appalling but intriguing datapoint is a recent report that some women found that using ChatGPT helped them reposition their resumes to sound more masculine to counter gender bias in the recruitment process. A recent study lends support to this, finding that AI-generated text frequently reflects privileged male writing styles. These biases will be baked into many models. It is entirely understandable that some women will use these tools to equalize these disadvantages. But according to a recent article in the Economist, women are still less likely to use GPT at work.

I think the more important point is that noone should feel the need to use AI to game the recruitment process. Individual job seekers can’t change the system and have to do what they must to stay in the game. But it’s a broken system when both parties lose sight of the original goal—making sure that compatible candidates and employers meet—and just get distracted by the arms race that’s been kicked off through AI.

Next Week, Disinformation…

Where do we stand in different fields and industries? Are we seeing Military-grade or Clown-grade?

AI in Law and the Legal Profession

Greenshoots

A Google DeepMind executive recently said that they expect their AI to increase efficiency so much that it will handle 50% of the information requests in its legal department.

Grift and Hype

But another source reports that there’s an uptick in court cases being lost due to ChatGPT-related fabrications and omissions. Reuters writes that rules for AI-generated evidence are in flux, with many uncertainties.

AI in Finance Finance

Greenshoots

Klarna cuts 50% of their workforce and plans to streamline and enhance efficiency through AI technologies. JPMorgan opts for internal genAI assistant, and the former COO of Brex with new venture in fintech says GPT is already upending the mortgage industry.

Grift and Hype

But HSBC executive Edward J Achtner criticized the banking industry's exaggerated claims regarding AI success, labeling it "success theater." He says that while AI shows potential, tangible results remain scarce.

AI by the Data

We are trying to monitor the field of AI as seen through the lens of public media, news, and academic research.

We are tracking four main future trend trajectories:

  1. AI Has Plateaued: AI might be hitting a ceiling, with further innovations offering diminishing returns. As technology maxes out and fundamental issues like hardware limits surface, AI could settle into niche, utilitarian roles—much like mature industrial tech that’s reliable but no longer groundbreaking.
  2. AI Is Hype: This skeptical view argues that AI’s overinflated by marketing and media. Despite bold claims like "AI will replace humans," practical applications have struggled to deliver meaningful, widespread impact. It's like past tech bubbles where hype outpaced reality, only to eventually burst.
  3. AI Will Evolve Gradually: Instead of dramatic leaps, AI will see steady, incremental progress. Think post-dot-com internet evolution—genuine advancements will continue, just more gradually.
  4. AI Will Accelerate: The most optimistic scenario sees AI breaking new ground, possibly leading to Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) and integration into everyday life. This sci-fi-like future presents massive opportunities but also significant ethical and societal challenges

Key Metrics

54 articles from 33 unique news sources were added to the database in the past 7 days, on average around 7-8  per day.

Key Indicators have not changed from last week:

Most Common Future Signal: AI will accelerate

Most Common Driver Type: Catalyst

Most Common Sentiment: Positive

Most Common Category: AI Business

The article dataset this week is almost balanced, with a fairly equal distribution of positive, neutral and negative sentiment.

There’s a slight bias towards positive articles. As we’ve noted before, business and industry media is generally more upbeat in tone.

Chart 1: Sentiment, past 7 days

Our scenario heatmap shows that public reporting still indicates a positive sentiment that AI is accelerating and remains the most commonly predicted or anticipated scenario. This has remained constant for a couple of months at least.

Chart 2: Drivers and Inhibitors Heatmap

How to interpret the Drivers & Inhibitors chart:

  • Each cell represents a combination of driver type and future scenario
  • The color intensity indicates the count of articles (darker = higher count)
  • The number in each cell shows the exact count of articles
  • Look for patterns in color intensity to identify trends across drivers and scenarios

Removing Business Bias from View

But we did note before that the Business news and media are generally optimistic and upbeat. What does it look like when we just look at the data without including the “AI Business” category?

With Business datapoints

Time Range: 30/05/24- 11/10/24, 559 Articles

Most Common Sentiment: Neutral
