Customized Cycles for ASHA Health Workers

There are around 8 Lacs + ASHA(Accredited Social Health Activist) health workers working to create awareness on health and its social determinants and mobilize the community towards local health planning and increased utilization and accountability of the existing health services. These health workers daily walks around 4-5 kms per day covering nearby villages .

They have to work in all weather conditions be it summer ,winter or rainy season. India is a country of extreme climates , hence working on such adverse conditions some times takes a tool on their health as well as productivity. We understood their problem and donated around 150 customized bicycles to them .

We not only donated cycles but also monitored their productivity over a period of 4 weeks . Following was the outcome of the assessment :-

1) Reduction in time taken to travel by 57%.

2) Increase in livelihood earned by 17%.

3) Improvement in energy levels and working capacity by 97%.

4) Increase in no. of household visits increase by 42%.

During our informal discussion with ASHA health workers , they also suggested some features to be added like mobile holder and charging point , headlight to move during night , umbrella holder to protect them during rain and sunlight and all weather easy to carry bag for keeping their medical items safe
