November is Diabetes Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about this chronic disease and educating the public on ways to manage it and prevent its onset. As a certified diabetes educator and expert chronic disease physical therapist, I am on a mission to empower individuals with the knowledge and tools they need to holistically manage their diabetes and reduce their risk of developing this condition. One key aspect of a healthy lifestyle that can greatly influence diabetes management and prevention is physical activity. Diabetes is a chronic medical condition that affects how your body processes glucose, the primary source of energy for your cells. There are two main types of diabetes: Type 1 and Type 2. In Type 1 diabetes, the body's immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas, leading to a lack of insulin. Type 2 diabetes, on the other hand, is characterized by insulin resistance, where the body's cells do not respond effectively to insulin, and the pancreas may not produce enough insulin to compensate.
Several risk factors are associated with the development of diabetes. These include genetics, as a family history of diabetes can increase your susceptibility. Lifestyle factors play a significant role, with poor dietary choices, sedentary habits, and obesity being major contributors to Type 2 diabetes. Other risk factors include age, as the risk of Type 2 diabetes increases with age, and certain ethnic backgrounds, such as African American, Hispanic, Native American, and Asian American populations, have a higher predisposition. Additionally, gestational diabetes during pregnancy can increase the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes later in life. Understanding these risk factors is crucial for early detection and effective management of diabetes.
Physical Activity and Diabetes
Physical activity is a cornerstone of diabetes management and prevention. As physical therapists, we not only promote physical activity but we use it as a treatment modality in an individualized structured form called therapeutic exercise where the goal is to improve cardiovascular endurance, muscle strength, joint flexibility, balance, posture, and other functional limitations. Creating the lifestyle habit of regular exercise helps control blood sugar levels, improve cardiovascular health, boost insulin sensitivity, and enhance overall well-being. I encourage the public to explore different modes of physical activity/exercise. Find a mode of physical activity that suits your ability and something you enjoy. It's important to understand that physical activity is not limited to structured gym workouts; there are countless enjoyable and accessible ways to stay active, with dancing being one of the most engaging options.
