Grants for innovative solutions that contribute to healthy aging!

Johnson & Johnson Innovation hosts various Quickfire Challenges (QFC) that awards innovators from around the world with prizes including grants and expert advice in order to contribute to solving the challenges, for example the challenges of an aging society. We spoke with Xiao-Yu Song, MD, PhD, who oversees J&J Vision's global R&D for vision care and surgical vision, about the importance of innovation to Johnson & Johnson Vision and the significance of the QFC.

Q1:  How do you think Johnson & Johnson Vision can contribute to Japan’s aging society through innovation?

As J&J Vision, our tremendous opportunity to redefine healthy sight for life is through advancing standards of care across a lifetime of eye health needs from the pediatric eye to the developed eye, through the aging eye. Patient needs are greater than ever with increasing rates of time spent looking at digital screens and a growing aging population.

As noted in the Johnson & Johnson Innovation Japan Smart Healthy Aging QuickFire Challenge, by 2050, one in four people in the Asia Pacific region will be over 60 years old, with their senior population expected to triple to almost 1.3 billion between 2010 and 2050.[i] Furthermore, Japan is considered the “oldest” country in the world,[ii] with an elderly population of almost 30 percent of its total inhabitants.[iii] Furthermore, the concept of “eye frailty” is advocated in Japan for people to maintain their vision with aging.

This demographic data is staggering when paired with data on aging eye health, which shows that cataracts are the leading cause of blindness globally, [iv] with more than 90 percent of people developing cataracts by age 65.[v] There is an immense opportunity for eye health innovation in Japan. In R&D for the aging eye, we’re innovating to restore high-quality and range of vision to presbyopia and cataract patients.

It is important to recognize that our innovation in eye health is not only to solve for problems in the developed eye, aging eye or after they arise, but to also drive innovations in preventative care. That is why we are focused on increasing eye health education as well as scientific innovations for childhood myopia.

Q2: What motivates you through your work involving innovation?

I have the pleasure of leading our Johnson & Johnson Vision Research and Development organization and driving our overall R&D innovation across new product development and life cycle management support, as well as portfolio management and innovation governance across all platforms. Every day is full of exciting challenges as well as measurable progress in R&D --- from vision care to surgical vision, myopia, refractive surgery to presbyopia and cataract, and a 360-degree view of the possibilities within eye health innovation. There is no “typical work day” for me because the J&J Vision R&D team is constantly pushing ourselves to think about what’s next, like how we can help eye care professionals solve problems they’re facing or what solutions we can create to help address patients’ unmet needs.

Also, as a woman leader, I am extremely passionate about closing the gaps in diversity, equity and inclusion within STEM careers as well as those in the optometry and ophthalmology industries. I sponsor the Johnson & Johnson WiSTEM2D program in Jacksonville, Florida which is designed to champion women in Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, Manufacturing and Design by giving them the tools, resources and opportunities to succeed at work and at home.

Q4: Message for the QFC applicants?

The Japan Smart Healthy Aging QuickFire Challenge will certainly be energizing because there are so many unmet needs in eye health and opportunities in the Japan market. It is always exciting to see the impactful ideas that come from passionate, creative and dedicated problem solvers.
