The Words that Give Away Generative AI’s Text (Wired)

New words have fluttered into our vocabulary and in published abstracts, thanks to Large Language Models (LLMs). Researchers from Germany’s University of Tübingen and Northwestern University analyzed words in 14 million PubMed abstracts between 2010 and 2024. They found that words such as “delves,” “showcasing” and “underscores” appeared more frequently in papers after 2023. They estimated that at least 10% of papers on PubMed after 2022 were written with LLM assistance. Learn more.  

For AI Giants, Smaller Is Sometimes Better (Wall Street Journal)

Tech giants are starting to slim down their AI software, opting for smaller models to increase efficiency and cost where they see fit. According to The Wall Street Journal, Open AI’s GPT-4 costs $100 million to develop and uses over one trillion parameters of space, whereas smaller models can cost less than $10 million and use less than 10 billion parameters. Companies have started launching their own small models, including Microsoft, which debuted its AI laptop for search and image generation. Read the article.
