Is Delta's CEO's apology enough...

A power outage in Atlanta caused a global meltdown of Delta's operations. They immediately blamed Georgia Power, who rightfully pushed the blame back in Delta's corner.

Delta's operations are global in nature, they effect tens of thousands daily directly and perhaps millions indirectly. The economic impact of lost business and productivity are incalculable. This type of failure can and does effect our national economy  and to some extent our national security.

With so much at stake and with a company so large, one would rightfully assume that Delta would have a robust Business Continuity Plan (BCP) and perhaps have their reservation system hosted in a data center environment. The most stringent level is a Tier 4 data center, which is designed to host mission critical computer systems, with fully redundant subsystems and compartmentalized security zones controlled by biometric access controls methods. Some may say that is over kill but it is now evident that Delta dropped the ball on a fundamental element of business today which is a sound BCP.

This outage just makes me think about what other large companies, with whom we  depend on, do not have adequate policies  in place. Our lives today are so dependent on systems working that even a minor interruption can have catastrophic consequences.

Again, for me its just unthinkable that "just" a power outage caused the shutdown of Delta's reservation system. Perhaps eventually the truth will come out. Then again it probably won't.

What advice would you give to their Business Continuity/IT Risk Assessment Teams and is their CEO's apology enough?

Unthinkable! I think there is more to this story. This company should be investigated.

You know, when I heard about Delta's outage, I assumed that their backup plan failed too... and now that I've read your article, you've introduced the idea that they might not have had a backup plan. Wow. Wildly interesting!
