Disability History Month

Disability History Month

This Disability History Month, the focus turns to non-visible disabilities – disabilities that are not immediately obvious to others, but are thought to affect 80% of people living with a disability. Throughout the month, we will be sharing stories and experiences of our staff as they discuss living with a non-visible disability, the barriers they face, and how we can re-think disability in the workplace.

To kick off, co-chairs of our staff Disability and Wellness Network share why ‘hidden’ disabilities need to take centre stage.

“We feel it’s important to raise awareness on hidden disabilities. Due the nature of the disability, they often go unnoticed in the workplace and people can feel unsupported if the right mechanisms are not in place,” explains Camilla.

“Hidden disabilities can include ACHD and depression – conditions you wouldn’t necessarily think are disabilities. However, through small changes to accommodate these disabilities, we can make everyone feel welcome at work and able to perform at their best,” says Ras.

“Disability shouldn’t be a taboo subject and the key to making a place of work more inclusive is by asking questions. This will help you understand what changes can be made to help your team feel supported,” explains Katharine.
