Does it tire you to hire?

Does it tire you to hire?

Most recruiters do not "enjoy" hiring. They do a job. I enjoyed hiring, it gave me a chance to meet new people who thought differently from me, challenged my "one" view of the world and stretched my thinking.

If you want to get away from the pain of hiring, start listening to the other side. There is a story hidden somewhere, look for the story, look for the human being than just the candidate. Enjoy that cup of coffee with him/her. Most of us love talking about ourselves, our achievements, our opinion of music, movies, work, colleagues, bosses, workplaces....Look for those views. Encourage people (notice I did not use candidate) to talk about their views. You are on a voyage, discover as you go along. You will start loving the journey.

Long ago I was lucky to get introduced to the technique of "appreciative inquiry". It helped me to start my journey of listening. Most of us who recruit are too eager to hear the "right" answers, looking for clues which match the candidate to the competencies organisation is seeking in the role. We "miss" the human being. Spend that extra half hour to "find" the human being. When you find the "human" being, you will discover the person you are likely to get on the job.

Let us move away from hiring candidates to making human beings join our conversations and organisations.

Touched the senses of mine, a confident human being and an opportunistic candidate
